Why am I getting killed by greys?Follow

I justed started playing EQII about 2 weeks ago. Have been having fun exploring and getting familiar with the game interface. I've made it up to a level 27 soloing and doing some quests.

I have a newbie question - are there some quests that can only be completed if you are grouped? I find I'm getting frustrated trying to finish some quests in certain areas - Blackburrow for example. All the monsters are grey to me, but a lot of them are grouped and I'm dying a lot and slaving away for absolutely no XP! It seems bizarre that I can kill a blue out in the "real" world no problem, but then in dungeons I'm being slaughtered by greys. Does this mean that I left this area too late? Although if a lvl 17 monster can kill me now then it would have destroyed me a few levels ago! It's really frustrating that I seem totally unable to defeat certain monsters even when they are 10+ levels below me. Why is this? I don't think I'm ever going to be able to kill those stupid Blood Saber Proficients in Vermin's Snye... :(

Are these areas designed for groups only? Is it better to avoid them as a solo player?

Yep, there are. One way to tell is to check the zone in our [link=http://eq2.allakhazam.com/db/zonelist.html]zone list[/linkt. Another way is to mouseover the mob information in your UI when you have a mob targeted. It will tell you whether an encounter is designed for groups or an individual. It's quite possible to take out encounters made of multiple mobs solo, if it's not a raid encounter.

Another thing you might do is stop my the broker and upgrade your spells. The versions you get automatically are "Apprentice I", and are the weakest version of the spell. "Adept I" version drop from common mobs, and are better. Adept III are crafted by players, and are better still. "Master I" drop from raid encounters are are the best dropped version. This will give you more oomph against those nasty encounters.

When you con a mob look at the arrows. Generally solo mobs will have no arrows, or sometimes 1 arrow above their head. Heroic mobs usually have 3 arrows above their head. Being that your in blackborrow I can tell you most of those mobs are heroic and meant for groups. Depending on what class you are you can sometimes solo heroics. Usually soloing grey heroics should be fairly easy, however if your armor and spells have not been upgraded for awhile that could very well be a problem.

At the very least you should try to get your spells upgraded to app4 or adept 1. Adept 3 and Master 1 can be expensive for a new player and honestly at lower levels they are not always worth it. App4 is also player made just like adept 3, however app4 doesn't require rare materials so they are generally VERY cheap. If you can afford it though Adept 1 is really the best as in alot of cases Adept 1 spells have a slightly lesser chance at being resisted. Problem now adays is because of a skill added 2 expansions ago lower level treasured items (adept 1 spells being one of them) are more expensive since higher levels buy them up and basically destroy them. Transmuting was one of the worst idea's ever for a tradeskill IMO.

I think by default, the con system is the squiggly line thingie i.e. the mob name is surrounded by an ornate border. You can change your options in game to display arrows instead. Personally I find arrows a lot easier to understand, and they are how most players refer to the con system. They either point up or down.

When pointing down, wade in there - as long as the con doesn't also say (Heroic) in which case they are probably part of a large mob who have already prepared a tray ready to hand your butt back to you on.

When pointing up, they give a rough indication of the number of players you should have in your group to bring them down at an even con i.e. white. So, a white ^^^ would take a 3-player group. Obviously there are exceptions and you will always find plenty of players who will tell you how they soloed a triple-up orange con ;)

If you see (Epic) x some number, clean your armour up, then come back with lots and lots of friends: you have found a raid target ;)

P.S. 100th post - yippee

Huberts got it right. As default your border around the mob is ornate, but does not indicate how easy/tough the mob is. However, you can also check your target bar. It should usually say "Heroic" on it if it is a group mob. And as Hubert suggested, it is a lot easier to change your settings so you see arrows as opposed to just the ornate border.
