I'm a vet from FFXI and WoW, and I recently did the Direct2Drive download of EQ2 and the first few expansions (all but the most recent one). I needed something new, something that felt bigger and better.

I always liked the idea behind EQ, for a short stint I had played the PS2 online game Everquest Online Adventures. It was a little much to wrap my head around at the time, but it seemed like a great game.

Now, I want to try out EQ2. But the thing is, I'm not too sure on race/class.

Race, I just don't want to look silly. Some of the races look pretty odd.

Class is the more difficult choice for me, because I came from a diverse background in FFXI and WoW.

In FFXI, I was a White Mage (healer). Loved it. Tried DD classes, and couldn't get into them.

In WoW, I tried healing classes (priest, druid) and couldn't get into them, but I loved DD classes (high level Warlock and Hunter). I also enjoyed tanking somewhat, having a Paladin in the 50's as a tank.

So I'm torn on what I want to do. Also, I was trying to decide on a good server to be on. I like to RP, but the RP servers on WoW were no different from regular servers. No one ever really acted, was just the same old "LF2M (instance) need tank and heals for (Boss) paying 2g".

I like spellcasting, I like healing, and I like being useful with debuffs. Part of me was looking the Necromancer way, but I also want to be desired in parties. I also thought the bard classes (Troubadour and Dirge) looked nice, like opposites. From what I could tell, Troubadours buff, Dirges debuff.

So what all, from that make-up, would anyone say is a good race/class/server for me to go on?

Also, what major differences should I expect?

I see that, but it didn't answer the question I posted about what people here suggest I play.

I mean, I was a healer in one game and loved it, and a DD in another and loved it, each while hating the opposites.

I too am a veteran to WoW and FFXI. I plyed a RDM on FFXI (75) and had 4 lvl 70's on WoW. I played a healing/assisit class on FFXI and played botha healer and a DD class in WoW. I guess the main question for me is, which game do the jobs in EQ2 most compare to? WoW or FFXI?

the cool thing about this game is that with any race you can be any class. A few you may have to betray to get the actual class you want, but it's easily doable. So first, pick whichever race you want to be. Go by what feels right to you.

As for class, you say you like healing, and you like being usable for debuffs. My initial thought is Fury. It is a druid, I know you said you could not get into them as much in WOW, but overall, they're a lot more fun to play IMHO. A fury has the fastest quick heal, important in this game, along with great regeneration spells. They have a few debuffs, can actually do some decent damages to mobs, and are one of the easier healer classes to solo. Not to mention you can port, saving you time.

Another way you could go would be an enchanter (illusionist and coercer). They do not deal with health, but can power feed their group friends in time of need, something important during raids. They also solo well, by pet tanking.

There's a lot of options out there. My biggest suggestion is to make a few alts and level them up to 20 to get a good feel for each class.

For race I recommend choosing purely on which you would most like to play looks wise. The stats really are not important especially at higher levels. As far as servers go if you like RP try the Lucan server. Keep in mind not everyone RPs all the time. Most of the role playing you will find in guilds and RP groups, not so much in the main char channels and tells. I'm on the Lucan server myself and most of the people are very nice and there are quite a lot of role players. I could also help you out in the beginning if you like and if you're interested in role playing you might want to consider joining the guild I'm in (so long as you don't mind joining the dark side lol).

I also am a FFXI vet and if you liked white mage you might like some of the healers in this game (all of the classes are far more self-sufficient in EQ2 then in FFXI). I'm not too experience with the priest classes but I've heard lots of good things about fury and warden. It might be worth you time to just try out each class for awhile, that's what I did.

I also came from extensive WOW play. As far as differences, WOW is very balanced and easy to solo. EQ2 was modified in Jan. 2007 to be much more easy to solo. It used to be a b**ch to solo. The quests in WOW are BORING. The quests in EQ2 are very interesting and have a substantial feel. EQ2 is a richer gaming experience, in my opinion.

As far as race, any will work as later strengths are dependent upon development tree choices, like in WOW. Race only matters at the very beginning and not much at that. I actually whacked a level 30 character because I couldn't stand to look at it anymore, so I recommend going with an attractive one. I just stick with humans and some of the elves.

I go with the "evil" Freeport side, because is seems a bit richer in atmosphere and interactions. Plus they have some devastating character classes.

As far as a healing class,I recommend the Warden. Awesome healing and buffs. The other healing classes are power hogs and you quickly run out of mana.

As far at DoT, the Necromancer is probably the strongest solo class in the game. Amazing fighting and casting ability. Very similar to the WOW Warlock. A tip is to have a support character as a scribe (spell scrolls) and craft Adept III for all spells as you get them. It makes a HUGE difference and your pets will fight much better and look much cooler. Hope this helps.
