Assassins and Rangers in EQ2 have a wide mix of skills based around ranged combat and stealth. If you liked an EQ ranger chances are you will enjoy it in EQ2 also.
The main differences between the two classes are if you want to be good or evil, and it will affect your choice of race too.

And of course if you are a ranger, expect to hear a lot of ranger jokes ;)

I played WoW for some time as well. The assassin class reminds me of the WoW rogue build. If you go evil, you might try the dirge, a scout/ bard class. Both ranged and dual weapon. Stealth and serious buffs. Try it on the starting island and see if you like it.

EQ2 seems to favor monk classes a whole lot. my monk can wipe the floor with mobs almost non stop that would cause my shadowknight several minutes of downtime to regain hitpoints. two even cons with my SK at 20 means about 2/3rds of my health gone. i can do 4 with my monk before it needs a rest.
