Hail EQ2'ers at Allakhazam.

So, for those of you who assisted me in my last post - the problem was that I needed to give them credit card info in order for the free 30 days to activate. I had a feeling that might be the case, and still think some notice would have been nice, but nevertheless they did get back to me (4 business days later).

In the mean time, I had already created a new Station account and was busy with "Play the Fay" or whatever the demo is called. For some reason, with that demo you have to make a Fae character first and only after you get to L5(?) can you make another race character. Anyway, I enjoyed my way up to L10.999 at which point I was told I would need to buy the game to continue. Fair enough.

I have a bunch of questions-

(1) Is there a big focus on grouping to level? I am looking for fun, involved group PvE to level up rather than almost-pure solo which I have done over and over in WoW.

(2) If 1 the answer to 1 is yes, will I be able to find groups for said leveling?

(3) Is Berzerker a good class? (I know, I have "is class x good" questions, too). To be more specific, are Berzerkers decent at soloing and wanted in groups?

(4) Are Berzerkers tanks?

(5) Are people welcoming to newbies? I had one person come up to me, say "wow nub," laugh and run off ... a bit stupid in my opinion. Who plays a game w/ a lower subscription base and makes fun of newbies? Gah.

(6) If I played, say, 10-15 hours a week, would I ever hit end-game and catch up with the rest of the population?

(7) I seem to have a LOT of abilities at my level (10) and many seem to be buffs. Are buffs a huge part of EQ2? Am I supposed to be using every one of my damage abilities? The way I have it set up right now, I fight by pulling with my bow and then hitting 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 which are my 4 damage dealing abilities. Is something new going to come along to make it more interesting? More generally, what is it that differentiates EQ2 combat from your vanilla MMORPG auto-attack plus a few buttons gameplay?

(8) How many button bars should I have visible? I have two almost full at L10 ...

(9) If I take Weaponsmithing as my craft, will I be able to make a lot of my own weapons? Is it worth doing that? I enjoy crafting gear and using it ... but also being able to craft for profit.

(10) Is EQ2 playable via dial-up 56k? (I only ask because I'm going on vacation and will only have dial-up for 10 days... yikes, I know)

Thanks so much for any and all helpful responses.

Good to hear they did give you the 30 days! (which I hope they ended up doing anyway)

1. There's more focus on grouping than in WoW, but less than in EQII. There is no problem soloing up to lvl 80, but it's a lot faster grouping. (and some classes are more suited for soloing than others, or at least will do it faster)

2. Normally, yes, being in a good guild is always a plus though and at times it's possible that you won't find all that many people doing what you want to do.

3. Not sure, I started a Sarnak Berserker for fun and he's pretty good so far, but not very far as yet.

4. Yes, I believe they are more popular for the position than Monks, but not completely sure about that. Guardians are most sought after though.

5. There are idiots in every game, I know of a lvl 72 that still acts like a complete idiot, most people actually have him on ignore.

6. Yes, but it will take time though, at that rate its definitely going to take a while to get to the endgame. I can get about 8 levels in the first hour, but things seriously slow down after that.

7. Don't forget that a lot of new spells replace the older versions. At lvl 74 I have four bars up, fully loaded, without counting crafting bars (which I only make appear when I craft, pretty much never really). As a Monk I have about 8 or so buffs. More for group members.

Honestly, it's a lot of button gameplay whilst fighting. The trick is using them at the right time, using your stuns directly after each other for isntance is pretty silly, best to wait till the mob is back up before using the next one.

8. 2 should be enough for a while, I tend to put my buff spells at a bar on top of my screen (two now, but those also include spells with a long downtime that I only occasionally use) and the ones I use at the bottom (yes, I use my mouse to click the spells, never liked to use my keyboard for it).

9. Well, as a weaponsmith you'll be able to make your own weapons (some are made by a woodworker too, but not really for a berserker), if you really keep up your crafting level with your adventuring level, you should be able to provide yourself with weapons, if your crafting level is a bit higher. A level 10 weaponsmith doesn't make lvl 10 weapons if I'm not mistaken.

10. I believe so, not advisable naturally.

I hope you'll enjoy this game, it's definitely worth it!

Glad to see you came over, burnt out on WoW myself and have been exploring ROK all week and I am loving it. Couple people over on Blackburrow server from Allakhazam, we are in a casual raiding guild that has been around since EQ2 launch and hails from EQ1. If you get bored on AB come on over!

Also some scrubs on Najena that post on the allakhazam forums, they are a shifty lot though. Oh and they have cross server tells if I recall, gotta remember how to do those now that I think of it.

1. Mix of solo or group. I found I could go out and solo quest, or start looking for a group. Grouping usually has you in either instanced or non instanced dungeons, some good loot and slightly better xp than soloing but either is viable. Can also get a high level to /mentor you which means they come down to your level and you can duo stuff, you get a slight xp bonus, fun times and good way to get shown around without getting PL'ed.

2. Finding groups shouldn't be too hard since new race came out with the expansion so there will be lots of Sarnak roaming around. The game is 3 years old now so it suffers from all the same old problems of grouping mid level, but no more or less than any other MMO with a group focus (less than ffxi though).

3 & 4. Berserker is like a prot pally, only better. Double attacks, big hits, more damage you take out the more you put out. That being said Guardian is still premier end game tank in much the same way Warrior is in WoW. I have a 39 Zerker (my only alt in EQ2) and he is a flat out blast to play and has tanked all dungeons to his level quite well. Not sure of current end game raiding but they can be tanks or off tanks and I have heard tales of them tanking and being close to the top of damage meters at the same time.

Good news is that if you level Berserker and then decide "I want to tank and only tank end game" you can betray cities and you switch over to guardian, from what I recall, remember I have been gone from the game since Dec 06.

5) EQ2 has one of the best communities in online gaming. After WoW its such a relief to come and play EQ2. That being said there are ******** in all games, just a much more mature and grounded community than WoW.

(6) One difference between WoW and EQ2 is that WoW really is about end game. EQII you can take your pace and there is so much content, that you level through it and only see a fraction of it all. That being said I started in April 06 and with some help from DSD and her husband I was lvl 70 by August/Sept playing at about 20 hours a week or less. They have rest xp (called vitality) which helps, access to AA's at lvl 10/20 really help speed up leveling through content that was never designed to have them as well.

7 & 8. Little more button mashing in this game, as a 71 Assassin I have 3 bars of combat related stuff, most of which I use. I have 1 bar with buffs, hearths, mounts etc off to the side.

9. Dial up ftl, no idea. It will be slow so it would be a good time to up your crafting or knock out quests with lots of running around I spose!

Looks like most of the bases have been covered in regard to your questions. I would make a suggestion though, to start over on a new server. Maybe Unrest or Lucan D`Lere if you want RP. AB smells like cheese and regret.

Why would you play eq2 on vacation? Isn't the whole point of a vacation to get away from normal life?

I'm going to Florida to stay at my grandparent's condo (they won't be there). I have 10 days with no work, no school, no teaching (I'm a student teacher at the moment and I work early mornings at Starbucks ... busy life).

In Florida, my girlfriend has as much time as she wants to sun bathe. I go out for an hour, get some sun, swim w/ the gf, and I'm done - ready to spend the afternoon in the air conditioning with nothing to do but manipulate pixels on a computer screen in PEACE.

what means this "peace" you speak of? Is that when no one calls you Mommy for a whole hour?
