Rise of Kunark, first impressions?Follow

#1 Nov 17 2007 at 12:07 PM Rating: Decent
In short, I like it. I did have my doubts about it, during beta and at the start of it. The skipping of fourty levels of content, one huge zone,...

But all in all, I am really enjoying myself, the quests are enticing and at times fun (some challenging, but haven't encountered all that many of those unfortunately), the AA is flowing like crazy (got about 5 AA's so far, from 76 to 81, very swiftly) and xp is coming along nicely (one new level and only need 20% more to get to 72).

Sure, the new mobs are pretty tough, but there are ranges of toughness. Drachnids are a lot tougher than for instance the hill giants (imo anyway) or brutes.

I even set a new record of falling damage, 1.8 million if I haven't misread it.

As I've only been around Kylong Plains center and most of the western side of it, I hope to find a lot more during the weeks to come!

Heck, even the new spell prizes aren't excessive, only payed 22 gold at most for one lvl 71 spell.

What about the rest of you?

I'm liking the quest content and the rewards are great upgrades for me, a non-raider. Good expansion so far!

I haven't used a single quest reward so far myself. But I did get a whole load of legendary or fabled items, guild backed even, in recent months. (all bought, guild has done several instances, but no real raids so far, haven't seen any items drop for monks so far)

The items I get are close, but not really better than what I have, so far anyway.

What did strike me as a bit odd, there is a bundle of items to be bought when you reach the 50.000 faction limit with Teren. I've skimmed the list and there is only one item in the list I would consider buying to replace one of my own. Kind of odd considering the rather huge amount of time to get that faction.

There was a quest I did that gave me a very nice neck item. I think it involved killing 8ish drachnids. IT had good caster stats, lots of hp/mana, and 10 in combat regen. As a necro I can really use the in combat regen for lich.

I seem to have a spent a lot of time in Kunark laying on my back, looking up at the sky and not breathing, so far.

I got the neck piece that fronglo mentioned - good, as there are not many decent neck pieces around (at least not to a mainly soloer).

What I've seen so far looks excellent. Gives me the same feeling as Thundering Steppes & Enchanted Lands, my favourite zones. I do like the snow up in the mountains. The mobs do seem tough though: I struggled against non-heroic mobs only 2 levels above me (was L66 zerker at the time). I do like the fact that the drachnid hunters just stand there a fire arrows at you, as mine cause about 3 times the damage of theirs!

Spent a good 10 hours playing this weekend at a bud's house (with good interweb connection). 3 man group. He 2-boxed with a wizzy and a shaman, I had my pally).

Our goal was to explore and do quests. No grinding was allowed unless it involved quests we were working on.

First Impressions:

1.) Zones are huge!!! We tried to explore as much as possible and hit every bird (flying lizard) station. I like these huge zones though it didn't make a difference in game play.

2.) Tons of quests. And they keep coming. Logged 80% to level 72 with plenty of quests still left to do. Lots of soloable content.

3.) Some of the weapons/armor and quests rewards are friggin awesome. Two quest rewards were rings that were huge upgrades. It seems that one stat is massive (+28 str) and then the rest are below fabled and legendary gear of the previous expansion. Resists have been less on the new gear (level 70-71). not sure about the later levels.

4.) There is huge money in Adept I spells atm. Main reason is that we did not see many drop after 10 hours of exping. Looted maybe 10-12 books over that time. Most were 30+ gold on broker. Some were listed for 60 gold.

5.) Not many places with Herioc Triple ups... In fact, Karnors Castle had level 73-75 triple ups but was way too hard for the three of us to handle. That was the only place we saw difficult mobs.

6.) Saw my first level 80 toon last night on Nektulous server. ******* even had some level 77 fabled gear... Some people have way too much time on their hands.

7.) Haven't crafted one bit. Harvested a bunch with no rares found.

8.) Quest experience rewards were so-so. Most gave 1-2%. Some quests that were more difficult gave 3-4% but that was rare.

9.) Exp from killing mobs was very slow. Of course the three of us were killing soloable mobs most of the time. Every once and awhile there was a sinlge up arrow mob.

10.) The nostalgia factor was huge. Drolvargs, Giants, Cockatrices, etc... Yumm.

will probably never see the higher end content, still lothe the button smashing fighting that forces you to spend more time focusing on your button smashing bar instead of the fighting...but

the sarnak just look sooo coool. nice job. the startig area with the differabt islands that keep you moving does a fantastic job of taking out the grind feeling and gives it more of an exploring feeling ingame. WoW did a great job with this too. the old EQ1 style of sitting in a single zone for weeks grinding out xp have faded and its a good thing IMO.

the rewards for the first 20 levels are just a notch beter than neriac, and two notches better than either freeport or qeynos. the drop rate is good enough that i can usually upgrade atleast one item in a 2 hour play session, and plenty of items to sell for coin.

over all, i think it is a better expansion than feydark, again, IMO. but then that whole "purple butterfly" thing just seemed sooo...gay to me. and again, i never saw the high elf city because in their infanite wisdom they decided to make it a high level raid zone attached to a starting area. i doubt many people ever saw it.

getting better. nice job. the sarnaks are what the iksar SHOULD have been in EQ1.

I have gotten one rare off a lumber node. When I put it up that night it was selling for 80 gold. The next day it was down to 15 gold lol.

Yea I see there are lvl 80's popping up on unrest as well. That is why I don't see the need to keep increasing the level cap so rapidly. Hardcore players grind through the levels in less then a week anyways.

I also noticed the AA increase is only good for lvl 70+ players which was a let down to me. I have 86 aa's at level 66 right now, however my summoner tree is full. The AA's left in my NEcro tree are crappy IMO. I have my pet maxed out, everything else just seems to be slightly increase casting times, or upgrades to speed y dots up. I would much rather spend more AA's in the summoner tree to do things such as increase my pets taunt, pets hitpoints, my own personal stats, etc.
I guess I will just spend them and respec when I ding 70.

Having fun so far. Loving all the quests. Good stuff.

A little annoyed with the rarity of T8 loams. Ok, I know rares are supposed to be rare. I get it. But in 4 solid hours of straight mining yesterday I got 3 priest rares, 4 mages rares, 7 smolderings and zero loams. In 3 days I've gotten 1 single loam. Given that fighters and scouts have to share a skill rare on top of the seeming uber-rarity, it seems that I'm going to be stuck with App IV's and Adept I's for a good while into the tier.

The Echoes of Fayder was a letdown for me. The only zone I appreciated was teh loping plains. This was simply because it was the zone geared towards my level. It was also creepy and halloweenish which was great.

The Fae were cheesy. Kunark expansion is a lot more interesting. I may even start a Sarnak just to tour the newbie zones. But not until my main explored the high end stuff first.

This expansion I am taking my time and enjoying.
