Why would SoE have you download the ENTIRE game just to play small fraction? Seems it would make sense to cater to people's need of instant gratification (i.e. small download) and get them hooked. Apparently they decided for the 10 hour download for the Demo....

Oh well, not really complaining. Just curious as to why they made that decision...

I actually asked that question on PR at Fan Faire. Basically, they had the chance to a) give you a quick download, but restrict you and interrupt you for the big download, or b) getting all the pain out of the way up front so that if you had friends in the game you could actually interact with them and go explore a bit.

They went with b.

aye. you have already decided to try it. so better you get the pain out of the way so the only decision is to activate as opposed to saying.....it was fun, but im not going to spend 14 or more hours downloading it to play, and have you move on.

they set you up so the only thing you have to do to play is a couple mouse clicks, and away you go.

Of course the interaction is somewhat restrictive as well. I was getting tells from people and found I couldn't respond to them. I could only chat in say and OOC I believe, I think I tried talking in the n00b level channel and it wouldn't allow that either.

Regardless the demo was good enough to give a taste of the game. I got 3 different toons to level 10 where it caps out, but it was enough for me to see that I enjoyed it thus far and was willing to pay the 40 bucks to try it out further. The subsequent downloads suprised me though, of course I had the expansion to download as well. It eneded up being 2 sessions of 6 and 7 hours to follow. That was with a cable connection. It finally finished during last night though so I'll get to login tonight and play the full version.

thats my biggest beef with these demos too. the game from 1 to 10 is NOT what the game is 20 and up, where the dungons are pretty much off limits and any quest worth doing eventually leads to a dungon.

like EQ1s cave for example. once you get out of the cave, the game really changes direction. EQ2 has done alot of work making the game more casual friendly in the last couple years, and it has paid off for them.

but the demo should represent the game. mabe a mini raid, and a few dungons that are group only, with the solo content being pretty much all outdoors.

just my openion.

in EQ1 for instance, the demo should be group only and raids. it would be better than leaving a bad taste in peoples mouth by showing them something they want, then switching it to something else once they pay for it.
