What the heck do you feed these things? I've read "that they have a strange affinity for certain organic items found in Norrath" but I have no idea what that means.

not entirely sure here, but I was told that they eat the same things as the carnivorous plants. this is probably true, as a lot of my guildies were commenting that fertilizer items have gone through the roof on the broker...

I'm not sure what I fed my pet. As soon as I got it I wanted to see all that it does so I pressed feed and I got a Rare Expert Kunark Collection item. I no longer can feed it so I figured I just used it all. I am taking the information that I am seeing above this post and I am going to try to buy some bones and fertilizer off of the AH and maybe I'll get some more. Thanks for those who had questions about this pet, otherwise I would never have tried to feed it again.
Try fertilizer, flasks of pods water, and bones (not the collectibles) that drop. That is what I feed my plant.
