Let me start off by saying i have a dial up connection. Yes yes I know its 2007 and Im on dial up but believe it or not no matter how much money you are willing to pay there are some neighborhoods that companies still havent provided service to. I could go with satalite but that seems like waaay too much money for speeds that wont be all that much faster. Moving on.

I downloaded the play the fae trial yesterday because I havent played a MMO for a few months and got "the itch". I got home and started patching. 15 hours for the patch. Not the worst ive seen.

So I wake up in the middle of the night and check it. I reconnect and have about 4 hours left. No prob.

I wake up. Reconnect. Hmm another 3 and a half hours. Well thats odd but ok since ive waited this long why not another nearly 4 hours.

A little bit ago I can back and checked on my progress:595h 16m 23sec.

WHAT?

Was there a patch the size of another game today? Did the mouse on the patch server fall off? What in the world is going on?

I see that other people are having trouble logging in, so im gonna pray that this is a related problem and will clear up soon.

it took me about 14 hours on DSL. i wouldnt even want to guess what dial up would be.

but if i had dial up, i would probably go down to the store and buy the game. then all you would have to download would be the patches and not the whole game.

another option would be a download manager program that will automatically reconnect after a disconnect and start the download right where it left off when it droped.

My EQII folder is sitting at a little over 8 Gig. Your probably downloading at somewhere around 10kbps on dialup.

Running some quick math at 10kbps your looking at roughly 235 hours.

Running some more quick math it looks like your downloading in the range of 4kbps.

You probably downloaded the core client at first, thats what the 15 hours was. Once that was done it ran another scan to see what you needed and began downloading the entire game.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but I run a 7 meg connection and the entire game would probably take me in the neighborhood of 6 - 10 hours. On dialup, 500+ hours sounds about right.

If you have anything on your computer trying to access the internet in the middle of a download, your download speed throttles way down. Dialup tends to throttle down download speeds regardless of what you do.

On the subject of satellite, MMOs require an "always on" type of connection. Satellite is not considered an "always on" connection. Some people can get it to work on their satellite but others can't and most MMO companies don't support satellite connections. Most satellite connections have a ping rate so high that most MMO game servers have a disconnect ping rate default lower then the ping rate of the satellite connection.

A couple of things to know: first, with the Trial you're downloading the whole game. Second, the game's about 8GB right now (more in a few days when the expansion launches). Third, the patcher's download estimator is notorious for being flat-out-wrong.

Dunno what to tell you, but if the time cranked up like that something probably got hung up and I'd cancel and restart it.

Thanks for the tips guys. I didnt realize i needed to download the game. I figured (for some silly reason) that the 80meg file i downloaded would have the files i needed. It makes perfect sense that i need to download things like the zone files and character skins.

The free trial sounded like a cool idea but by the time I d/l the files my 14 day trial will be over.

It is a big time investment for just the trial. I have to imagine that the huge download has turned off more than one potential player. It makes me wonder if it wouldn't behoove SOE to make a "trial-only pack" with a special trial client. Clients flagged as a trial client woul only patch in say, the Isle zones or lower level parts of Faydwer and related models, sound packs, etc. for just those zones. Trial players attempting to leave these zones would be greeted with a "mysterious force blocks your way" kind of message. Should the player eventually decide they like what they see and go on to upgrade to the full game, a simple switch to the standard client would kick off the full download of all that Norrath has to offer in its unwieldy, bandwidth-smashing glory.

I asked a PR person about just that at Fan Faire. The answer was along the lines of they decided to get the pain of downloading it up front so that trial players were not restricted in where they could go; so if they have friends recruiting them to the game they aren't restricted to the Isles, as it were.
