SK NerfFollow

#1 Oct 24 2007 at 3:49 AM Rating: Decent
Hey everyone. I recently started EQ2 and rolled an Iskarr Shadow Knight. I've gotten to level 26 and am starting to wonder if its really worth the trouble on a non-PvP server. It seems like from what I've read I'm easily replaced in raids, I'm not very good at soloing, and off tanking is all I can hope for if I'm lucky in end-game.

On top of that I read about a possible nerf to SK... So, what I was wondering is, is SK even worth it anymore? I'd like to get into raiding at endgame, but I dont know how many invites I'll get as an SK, or how much of an asset I'll be to my guild.

This all depends on who you ask and the competency of the players that you surround yourself with. "Easily replaced on raids" applies to almost everyone. The classes are all /mostly/ balanced in that anyone designed for a specific role can pick up that banner and run with it. As such, yes, the SK can be swapped out with a guardian or zerker or any other plate tank for tanking a raid. This isn't to say that SKs can't tank raids, because we can and we do it very well. Some people just have the ignorant notion in their head that only guardians can main tank a raid and pallys, SKs, zerkers, etc are all secondary. My guild and raiding alliance frequently use SKs as main tanks to great success. Find a good raid group that knows what an SK can do and you'll be fine. If you aren't discriminating about the quality of players that you raid with though, you may be better off rolling a classic vanilla tank class.

I'm not sure what you are talking about not being good at solo'ing. Shadowknights are hands-down the best plate-wearing solo'er in the game. Without question. They are heads and shoulders above the other plate fighters in this department. Whoever told you this was just talking out of their ***.

Possible nerf? I don't know. I hadn't heard anything about this, but anything is possible.

There are not many slots on raids for tanks, period. You basically need to decide if you want to be a tank or not for your first question.

I run multiple raids every week, and have been doing so for years. Often, I have up to 13 tanks trying to land a spot in them. Ideally, I won't bring more than 3...4 max (including brawlers)....1 will almost certainly be a crusader. Basically, you will have as much chance as any to find a spot.

As far as off-tanking/MTing...it really depends on what type of guild/raid organization you join, and the leadership thereof. Generally, the strongest and best tank will MT...regardless of class. There is nothing that crusaders are unable to tank in game as of yet (minus Tactician's Armor....which NO tank class can tank :) ), so capability is not an issue. Both MT and OT are a lot of fun, and some encounters blur the distinction as well (speciality fights, Duel tanking etc..). Off tanks play a critical role, and see a lot more action than you might think as well btw.

As far as soloing....SKs ar one of the best soloers of all the tank classes. The general consensus seems to be between SKs and Brawlers being the best tank soloers....depending on what some consider the criteria (multi-mobs, even level named, survivability etc..). So again, it seems like another decision of whether or not you wish to be a tank.

I haven't heard of any upcoming nerfs to the SK class (and I follow all changes/rumours as best I can hehe). Regardless, SKs have gotten much loving over the years, and are the strongest they have ever been at the moment (imo).

Anyway, I play and raid constantly with my SK, Inquisitor, and Dirge. I get more invites for groups and raids on my SK than either of the others (which are both relatively rare classes). I see more need in my circles for my SK than the others. If you put the time and effort into a class that you enjoy and want to invest in...the payoff comes. Not sure if a tank will fill your criteria though, based on the questions you had.

Wasn't it update 37 or 38 that had shadowknights throwing a fit because something got nerfed? Anyways I can tell you from playing a paladin there are idiots who think paladins and shadowknights are not tanks. However the way I look at it I would just assume not associate myself with morons like that anyways so I wouldn't let that deter me.

I had a couple of times when I played my paladin that the group said we need to find a tank. I tell them "I am a tank." Then they just laughed and said no we need a real tank like a berserker or Guardian. I had all mastercrafted or better (this was before the mastercrafted nerf BTW) and I did a fine job. I just wasn't a guardian or berserker so I wouldn't a REAL tank so they said. That happened 2 times out of months of gameplay with my paladin. I can't really say as far as raiding goes as I have never actually gotten to raid in eq2. About the time I think I am almost high enough to raid SOE raises the cap again.

One of the last updates was a Nerf to Reaver.

It's more of a soloing/grouping AA, and the odd raid DPS SK liked it to help heal themselves up after AOE).

I'm a tank spec'd SK...never had that AA and never will. That same update improved a couple other tank related AAs (increased Mititgation Sypher. increased Blood Pool etc.)...so for a tanking SK it was yet another boost. Lots of DPS/SOLO/PVP/Group SKs were very upset with the Reaver hit...but that update was very nice to me :)

SKs hold up very nicely under Epic fire. The only mob that I have had issues with survivability to date was....hmm....can't think of any ;)

I play a SK and this is my take. SK's are best served as a secondary tank/secondary dps in a group. They are great soloers in my opinion, don't know why you think otherwise. The key is to be in the right zone for your level. I talked to a 70 SK a few weeks ago and he was telling me that at any one time there are not many 70s, nor many with lots of AAs online at the same time so he gets plenty of invites. Besides that, he told me that to tank he uses a shield and equipment that procs taunts (infuriating shout I believe), and to solo he typically uses a two-hander. I believe it is very important to have a plan when choosing your AAs, specifically with a SK. Like someone already said, decide if you want to be a all-out tank or not, and choose your AAs accordingly.

I agree that SKs make formidable second tanks, our snap aggro is second to none. That being said, if you're looking to MT...SKs are more than capable, and player skill and dedication levels the field immensely.
