Paladins as a tank?Follow

I am very interested in coming back to EQ2, but I have been away for a very long time, and it seems almost everything has changed (last time I played, you could only start as one of four classes, if that gives you an idea of how long it's been).

I have always played casters, so I am interested in a change. I have been seriously looking at starting a tank-type character. Just from the name alone, and the amount of +hate skills, Guardians seems like a logical choice. After looking over some info about them, and through their ability list, however, I don't think that is really what I am looking for. I was looking for a class with more varied skills and abilities. So, I started thinking about a Paladin.

My question, though, is if Paladins can not only hold their own tanking, but become sought after tanks for instances, and even raiding? I'm not only asking if they can, but if they commonly do. And if Palidans aren't a good choice, what may be a good one? Thank you for any input!

Paladins make a fine tank, however you do have some idiots who think a Paladin isn't a real tank for grouping and such. I played a paladin to lvl 57 awhile back and personally thought it was a fine class. Guardian to me looked just a little bit to boring for my tastes. I think when you get into heavy raiding a Guardian outshines a Paladin a little in the tanking department though.

I wanted to make a joke. I really did.

Paladins are great tanks. They have decent survivability and a wide array of stuns that slow incoming damage. Amends is great. You'll be taken in a heartbeat for exp groups and instances.

Raids, like Fronglo says, are another story. In a lot of cases you will only be a secondary choice to main tank a raid. This isn't due to the fact that you can't because you can, but rather that some people have it in their heads that only guardians should tank raids. This isn't true, obviously. I tank raids as an SK and our raiding alliance frequently uses both SK and paladin tanks. If you can find yourself a good guild or alliance that understands the classes and recognizes your abilities then you will have no problem being involved in raids.

I'd take a paladin as a tank over a guardian any day if I'm healing. If theres a problem the pally can outlast any other tank and possibly even save other group members.

Since my main is a Paladin i can answer your questions easily heh. But yes they are great tanks and i think ive seen one who was able to tank in raids....Guardians seem to be the raid tanks heh. Since pallies can heal they can keep themselves or group members alive so i count them as being better then the warriors at tanking. If you ever see people insulting paladins its due to how bad pallies were for the longest time if i remember correctly....so if you play a paladin dont let people insult ya just for being a paladin instead of a boring guardian!

I started EQII when it was launched as a paladin. I swiftly regretted that decision though, my Monk is a lot more fun!

Might try a paladin again to see how they are now, always liked that class.

I've tanked with my Monk in a couple of instances, but I take too much damage at this point. (against the hard mobs that is, the 72 or 73 heroics) Working on that though.

I like tanking in eqoa tho, it was simpler tho.

Here its just a lot more chaotic. Could get into a nice rhythm and you didn't have to lead the way through dungeons and such.
