I went to Butcherblock & picked up transmuting. I'm a level 28 Necro w/ Scribe of level 22. Since I was in the area, I visited Greater Faydark & did quests from level 1 up. When I got an item reward, I transmuted it. I got to about level 11 items when the red lettering said "Must be 15 in Transmuting skill to transmute item". I had 14 in transmute. I haven't since found an item I can transmute. They'll all too high level for 14. How do I advance trnsmuting now?
I also don't get the crafting part of transmuting, even though I looked at the FAQ. I've run into adornments while crafting. I assumed that transmuters disenchanted to components and tinkerers made adornments. Do transmuters make the adornments? What do tinkerers make? The documentation that came with the expansions sucks, so I have a lot of stupid questions.

No such thing as a stupid question.
You can advance your transmuting by buying stuff off the broker, or by crafting items, according to the chart in the Transmuting faq. Transmuting is a real ***** to level, at some point you're going to have to buy stuff. One strategy some people use is to start a new toon (of the same alignment) and level-lock them on the Isle to farm stuff for transmuting.
All crafting classes make adornments, including tinkers and transmuters. Once you hit skill 100 the only way to level transmuting is to make adornments. Note that these must be transmuter adornments, not adornments made my any other crafting class you might be. Transmuters make 99.9% of their adornments at the sage table (the two odd ones are at the alchemists table).

Helpful. One point of clarification, I thought on the FAQs it said that crafted items can't be transmuted. Clarification?
Also, what type of crafted items can be transmuted? I think the FAQ said that furniture and spell scrolls cannot. So how about jewlery, armor, weapons, etc?

What can be transmuted?
* treasured gear
* adept 1 and better spell scrolls
* legendary gear
* fabled gear
* master crafted gear (note – crafted item quality is irrelevant)
What cannot be transmuted?
* no-value items
* items without an equipable level
* Apprentice level spells
* recipe scrolls
* handcrafted items
* furniture
* consumables
* containers
* anything stackable
* Heritage Quest items
* mounts
* things which need mending
* there are still some odd quest rewards which do not Transmute.
What can be transmuted?
