New player wondering about classes.Follow

Yeah, so I just chewed my foot off an escaped from playing WoW (I didn't think it was possible for a game to make raid tanking boring) so now I'm looking for a class to try.

I definitly want to be some sort of fighter class so this seems like a good place to ask a few questions. I played a paladin in WoW, so for this I was looking chiefly at the Shadowknight/Paladin and the Berserker.

I'm looking for something that can do a little more than just be a tank, maybe put out some damage, but still be able to do the job when the need arises, but I can't seem to get a good feel for the classes just with a few one-sentance blurbs and a spell list.

Is the berseker like they're portrayed in typical games? Able to dish out damage but dying relativly easy? Or can they still be chosen as a functional tank?

Or with shadowknight, would I always be a second chair tank because the class seems to be more offensivly oriented?

If I play a paladin, I won't be forced to be a healer will I? And if not will I be like a WoW paladin, able to soak up damage and stay alive almost indefinitly, but hit like a 2 year old with a wiffleball bat?

Is this the kind of game where if I'm not a major specilized tank class (guardian I'm assuming) I won't get to do so in raid situations?

Just wondering before I start getting serious with a char. Don't have the countless hours I used to to feel out every single class anymore.

Bezerkers can dish out some nice dammage and can be a very functional tank. They are not frail, and can take a beating well.

You will have a tougher time getting a main tank slot than a warrior class, a bit less trouble landing an off-tank slot...but you will have to work for what you get. SKs take a fair amount of skill and experience to excel. They are more than capable of handling any tankable mob in game though. If you like a challenge, and want a tank with a ton of style and versatility...might be for you. It's far from boring maintanking as an SK...very interactive, and very high paced. My main toon is a Shadowknight Main tank and Off-tank (2 diff raid groups)...a real blast to play.

You will not be forced into the healer role, though you can help a bit...even occasionally save the day with a well timed Lay on Hands. They can take a fairly nice beating, and put out moderate dammage. Paladins are often picked up as off-tanks. They can main tank anything currently in game as well.

With the top end raid guilds (of which some servers have precious few)...so far, the usual MT is a Guardian. To a degree, that is a holdover from before some combat and class changes that leveled the field quite well between the choices.

However, there are all manner of guilds that raid...as well as many a pickup and raid alliance. Many of them will simply run with the strongest tank available (of any class), or one they know will get the job done. You would be surprised how few tanks push their class to its limits (of any of the tank classes). If you put in the time and effort....regardless of your final choice, you will find your spot.
