It depends on you connection speed. When I updated for the first time, I was kinda disapointed that it took so long. I spent about 5-6 hours total before it finished.

I wouldn't stress it. They only guarantee them for 3 months, but the only time they've deleted toons was on server mergers, and then like only level 10 and under that hadn't been played in six months, or something.

Then you should be fine...i know my characters from EQ1 are still there and i havent played it for about 1 1/2 years :P and usually SoE only deletes characters if they have wierd names like skfjdpoigsd or if they do a server merge lol. Oh yeah and to add my opinion...yes it is well worth the 8 hour wait for such a good game :)
