I'm sick of Wow, so I DL'ed the trial of EQ2 and I absolutely love it so far. Wow has gotten stale imo. The only problem is that it is incredibly laggy on my PC and the graphics are subpar, even though Wow runs fine on it. I really enjoy the variety of classes/races to choose from on EQ2.

(The PC I have now is a 3 year old Pentium 4 w/ 1 gig of Ram and an ATI 256 graphics card; not sure the model number)

Anyhoo, I convinced my fiance that I need a new computer, and he's letting me get one! So we can play EQ2 together :) So I'm looking at some new PC's online and it looks like I can get an AMD athlon with 2 gigs of Ram for under $800. The only thing is that they all have Vista, and I've always had XP. Will Eq2 run okay on Vista? I have heard it cause alot of problems, but I want to make sure before I shell out $1k for a new system.

Thanks!

EQ2 will run with Vista, it just may need some settings tweaks to get it to run properly. The tech boards on the SOE forums have tips on getting it working.

Just be wary of the machine you purchase. Thats a good price and 2GB of RAM is more than sufficient for playing EQ2. You just need to look into the video card and make sure it will be able to handle everything. A machine priced like that generally doesn't come with a good 3d card out of the box and you may have to upgrade it.

So, in theory, would it be better to go with 1 gig of ram and a better video card? (instead of more ram and a mediocre vid card)

In theory, yes. Right now I have 1gb and a good video card and everything runs fine, except for lag in Neriak and sometimes on raids. I'm looking to upgrade to 2GB of RAM in the near future. 1GB and a good video card would be better than 2GB and a mediocre card. But you'll probably want both in the end anyway so...yeah.

I recently upgraded from a geforce 6100 to a 8600. I can now play the game on max settings and it plays full speed about 90% of the time. IT still lags while in big cities and of course the docks in Zek. I imagine if I was raiding Id have to turn the settings down a little bit as well.

IF the graphics look subpar you probably have them turned down. IT picks a setting for you automatically based on your PC. More then likely if you bought a name brand PC it probably has a crappy video card.

Just to be clear when people are stating 'lag' they're really meaning their frame rates drop into the dirt. At least that's what happens to me on a very well spec'd out machine. There is so much added to the visual spaces in these areas it's a challenge to draw it all without turning down the preferred visual draw settings.
