I have a bit of a rant.. sorry. Follow

#1 Aug 14 2007 at 9:01 AM Rating: Decent
Ok before i begin... I LOVE EVERQUEST 2!!! I REALLY, REALLY LOVE IT!

Now thats said, on with the rant!!!

Soe, enough with the ****!! This game is old now, and sure it still looks good but its not SPECIAL! A top of the line machine with an 8800 should samash this game to peices! Look at lord of the rings for christ sake! Its time to stop messing around and optimize your damn game and stop being silly and thinking your graphics are still out of this world! Believe me, they are not no more!!!!.

Sorry for my mega rant but its true, the graphics arnt mega no more, they are average and an top of the line machine should hammer it, i brought this game thinking i could just run it smoothly, i cant! I have E6420 with an 8800gts Overclocked 640mob with 2GB of ram and an Asus P5N32-E Motherboard and i still get stutters and loss of framerate even with shadows turned off!

This is not acceptble, this is a 3 year old game and like i said, YOUR GRAPHICS AINT SPECIAL NO MORE!. All i have to say to you is...

OPTIMIZE IT!

: ( Sorry guys, but i thought i would just spill my guts out because like i said, it isnt acceptable really is it? The games we have now blow this game away, hard, and our machines (if you have one like mine) can run them flawlessly.... so really, its time for SoE to give EQ2 a good optmize and to stop messing around. Wouldnt your agree?

My new tower handles the game just fine. I even played a raid on "High quality" graphics and didn't have an issue. The only place I lag seems to be Qeynos Harbor by the docs.

2x256MB Video card.
Dual 2.0 processor.
1 gig of Ram.

Nothing special there.

"Extreme" graphics is another story. I do get some lag in zones like stormhold and areas where lighting plays a big part. It's not even bad lag. Just a stutter from time to time.

you say everything maxxed. Does that include Very high quality? Most computers, no matter how good they are, tend to have an issue with playing respectably in this format. They did that on purpose so that the game graphic dept could grow with the continuous updating of computers. Might I suggest you try on balanced with particles and shadows maxxed and see how that runs? You should get as good of a graphics, plus all the neat extras, and it should reduce the lag.

Thanks mistress, as long as the game still looks good for me.. quick question. In the gameplay videos they released what graphics quality do you think they were running that at?

honestly? I think they did it on high quality and then did a little "fixing" with photoshop. I know for a fact the character models they used were not from the game. Dont let the movie trailor be your standard. A lot of it was cinematics. Every game seems to do that now. I was bummed after seeing WOWs trailor then actually getting in game. talk about a let down, heh.

This thread makes me feel pretty good about my five-hundred dollar box I bought on Craigslist. I haven't had a moment of lag yet, although I have yet to raid, and I play with everything maxed at the same resolution as you, something like 1240x1028. I've got dual AMD Optirons at 2.7, a 7600gt at 256, and 4GB of RAM, though. The RAM could make the difference, I suppose.

Emm, when you say everything maxed, with all the bars all the way up, the water effects on full with shadows set to full and you dont get any lag and play smooth, honestly, not to sound mean, but i don't believe you.

I love my Dell. 4 gigs of memory, couldnt tell you my graphics card, but hubby knows and specifically bought it with EQ2 in mind. I can run 2 accounts simultaneously with no issue, my main always on balanced. I bought this big rig because I enjoy making music vids out of raid encounters and I wanted high quality graphics.

One things I've learned when raiding. No matter how good your rig is, and how well it handles, always turn your prticle effects down to min and lower everything else in particle areas. Not because your computer may lag, but because with 24 people hitting one mob at the same time, you can't see the mob itself for all the damn particle effects Smiley: lol

Mistress ,even the actual gameplay videos them selves? (Gameplay as in you see the character walking around, interface and everything). They looked good and looked smooth and that was 3 years ago.

Yes, with everything purposely turned all the way up. I can run around the broker in East Freeport with twenty other toons in close proximity. Last night we were running around with a full group killing what, maybe eight mobs at atime DSD? No lag whatsoever. Although I did notice that the particles were making me go all googley eyed.

It really might be the RAM. I see DSD also has 4GB.

And as for the graphics of this game not being fantastic, I don't agree there at all. I just came from Vanguard, which was supposed to be the most graphically intense game like, ever, and it was only slightly better in some instances than EQII. Overall I think this is the prettiest MMO I've ever played.

not quite sure what you're asking here, or referring to? Do you mean my own vids? The vids the devs created? Or something else?

And BT, I think there were a few spots where we got ambushed by 4 groups of 3, so I think the most we were fighting at once was 12. So, yeah, it could have been a lag fest. But I had no issues even with everything turned up.

This one is pure cinematics. I can not find the other video, but there was one prior to release that had a group fighting Venekor in Cazic Thule. That was the one I was referring to as most likely being in high quality and possibly touched up. It has been a long time though since I have viewed it

I would say that vid you linked is most definitely balanced, with shadows and flora turned on, and played on an older ( at least 3 yr old) lap top. Mine easily looks that good with zero lag. If you have a decent rig, your computer should be able to handle that spec with no problem. Only lag issue that may be a pain is Qeynos Harbor or East Freeport, and that is mainly because those two are the hubs of the world.

Ok thanks mistress, you are extremely helpful!. Would you say, me playing on the settings that guy was using, would you say i am missing out a lot on the graphics side? (In other words, because i have been playing with everything cranked up, will i be really let down by playing on balanced?)

Thanks again, Mistress DSD

hehe just call me DSD. I personally have never found there to be much difference between balanced and Very High quality except for lag issues. I've switched between balanced and Extreme quality for screenshots, and even then I notice no real difference. Just the lag. There IS a difference between balanced and high performance, but it's not too bad. huge difference though, between balanced and Very high performance. I would only use that setting with my rig if I were two boxing in a raid, and then probably only with one account.

Trust me, the minimal difference between balanced and above will not kill the game play. As long as you are enjoying your character, and find decent people to play with, you will forget about the minute details and enjoy the experience as a whole. Good graphics most certainly makes more a more enjoyable enviorment, but it's not the only thing that pulls us back into the game every night. That's usually the play itself, and our buddies waiting for us in Norrath.

Hehe, im new to this forum so i dunno what your rank was so just tryed calling you a mix of both of those names: P

Can i ask you somthing else if you dont mind, do you play in letterbox mode like me? Or full screen? Personaly i perfer it in the letterbox mode because i think it looks really cool like that, but if you do play in fullscreen, do you feel like i am making a mistake playing with letterbox mode? (in other words, am i being werid doing it because all i am doing is blocking parts of my view). Would you recommend playing in fullscreen mode? (Also, i heard letterbox reduces lag.)

Thanks again DSD.

I dont notice a difference. When I can, I prefer full screen, but that's my own preference. Do you lose sight of anything playing the other way? No. I'm able to create two screens and halve them in size to two box and I still see everything I would on afull screen, just a little smaller. Again, it's all preference.
My advice to you, would be to get online once the servers are up, keep in mind there might be more lag tonight than normal due to the stuff theyre doing, and to play around with your settings. Try full screen, smaller screen, balanced, high performance, high quality, flora on/off particle effects max/min/middle shadows on/off water on/off, etc... you get the pic. And save a few you like under your loading settings and go from there. Everything is truly a preference, from graphics, to game play to class and race chosen. I cant answer those questions for you. Only you can. GL!

Do you enjoy playing in letterbox? Then let it be. I play in full screen just because I like it. I did start in letter box, which at the time i liked as my windows were in the black areas, but as i ended up adding more and more windows it just got cluttered.

So, I switched to full screen and maximized the screen to what my video card can hold. As DSD is going to tell you, it is personal preference, if you feel immersed in Norrath with letterbox, who are we to tell you to change that?
#25 Aug 14 2007 at 12:45 PM Rating: Decent
I did the opposite...started in full screen and moved to letter box (even used the gold borders). It took a little while to get used to it, but I really do enjoy the "epic"ness of the game in this fashion. And as Kov has said, putting all of your hotbars and buttons in the black certainly keeps things nice and organized. What I like about that is having the view completely clear of opaqued and blacked out buttons and keys so I get a good look at everything. But then I get confused very easily =P so having things set up in this fashion prevents my misclicking.

And honestly? It's like rearranging the furniture in your living room...have your settings one way only to decide to change it around 2 weeks later. Go with the flow. :)
