10 hours and still going :/Follow

Hey guys,

So I get a invite via Email to try out EQ2 for a month. Sounds great to me. I love trying out MMORPGs.

Started with FF11, moved on to WoW (current), Beta'd LOTR, and very shortly tried Vanguard (was not a fan... I watched a player 4 levels higher than two mobs, running away from them... they kept aggro'n him until he was dead). I guess I'm just looking for one that's really good, and the controls are good too. WoW is really good, but the controls are tough (for me at least). FF11 was really good, but I hated LFG just to walk to the AH (not really, but you need to be grouped for almost everything).

Anywho, here's my question.

Last night about 9 p.m. I started downloading the game via interweb. It said 5 hours or so. So about 1 a.m. I check it... yeah still downloading. Still hours away. I watch as it tried to download the "file fom h3ll" as I call it. That one file took a good 1 1/2 hours to complete.

Anyway, I just wrapped up my 1st disk in the Lost season 2. So I hit the bed. Wake up.... 7 freaking hours left?? 07:06:23 I had to do what I hate the most- leave my computer running when I'm not home.

Is this right? I sure hope I like this game =D

Sometimes a file will get stuck during download. Restart the downloader and it should start again. Don't worry you won't lose all of the files you already downloaded.

6-8 hours is normal-ish, sounds like it got hung up somewhere. Cancel and restart. It will scan all the files to see what you've got - don't panic, it won't re-download everything.

Well, the game is awsome, so that should help once it's done patching. I've had stop and start the d/l a couple times, sometimes that helps. I've also noticed that the patches estimates longer d/l times while d/ling large files.

P.S. The path of the richious man is beset on both sides by the iniquities of the selfish, and the tyranny of evil man. Blessed is he, who in the name of goodwill, sheppards the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper, and finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brother. And you will know that my name is the Lord, when I lay my vengeance upon thee!

Ah cool. I'll get home at lunch in 2 hours, and it'll prolly be downloaded. If not I'll shut down and finish up when I get off work.

Can't wait. Seen some pics of EQ2 and it looks nice.

See ya in game... hopefully Smiley: dubious

Glad to hear we have another new player comming over! When I downloaded the trial it was around ~8 to 10 hrs and then another 3 hours or so when I started using my uncle's alt account, which had all the expansions and adventure packs (Yay for rich uncles!). Thats cool that you get a whole month to try it out!

*After lunch update*
Went home expecting to see a EQ2 installed.... 59:30:10 hours left. I canceled that asap. Started to reload it.

03:45:10 hours. Which will put it being done just before I get home. If that don't work, I'll have to pass on EQ2 I think. installing/updating should be the easy part... somewhat of a indication of things to come.

No offense to the current players. I think it could be because of stupid Vista. It's crap, and nothing seems to work like it used to.

Yeah, you just got stuck on a file. I have no idea what causes it, but sometimes a file ceases downloading or a connection to the patch server hiccups. When this happens the updating stops, but the logic that estimates your download time continues to update and because nothing is really happening your "estimated time" just grows.

Hmm thanks Stugein

Love the avatar btw, forwarded it to a few co-workers. I got like 6 more disks on season 2 of Lost to run thru... and semi-burnt out on WoW for the time being, I'll keep on trying I think.

I just can't understand why the game is in .zip format... but they don't put a archive of patches in .zip format :/

I feel you GYFFORD, whenever I have to download the game it really sucks. That said I know you're going to love this game. Just do yourself a favor and give it at least 4 hours of play before you form your opinion. Also, I would roll as a toon in either Kelethin or Neriak

Ah yeah, planning on it. I tend to roll toon after toon to see "how the other 1/2 lives" when I'm new at a game. I figure I'll have a feel for the game by Sunday. Thanks for the pointers tho. I'll check out those servers.

He was suggesting that you roll your characters starting in the city of Kelethin or the City of Neriak.

Personally, I'd go with Neriak, because the stinking goody goodies just make my teeth hurt.

Neriak is about a thousand times cooler.

Besides... The dark side has cookies ;)

Neriak has a great atmosphere, but being so new the lag there is still atrocious. Qeynos Harbour used to be the tops for laggy zones, but Neriak is worse and can be damn near unplayable at peak times right now even on a good machine.

That being said, the script progression for a new character in Darklight Wood is some of the best work SoE's artists have come up with to date. And yes, I too feel for someone who's downloading the some x number of gigabytes of information - my file stack for eq2 is nearing 9 at the moment... (but I don't feel that too deeply; I was one of those people with a 300 baud modem way back when too... Just consider how remarkable things have become.)

As to area lag, I don't see that such a problem in Neriak on Befallen. However, I will give a shout out about playing the zone in extreme quality when the program wants to add just one more 1 meg drawfile to the queue and I'm already topped out in a 4 gig Vista platform...

I just downloaded EQ2 "Free Trial Version" this week. Yes it took me over two days to complete. I am also running on Cable Internet so I haven't the slightest what the problem was. Eventually you will get there. ^ ^ I did end up re-buying this game and now am on a regular account. You are not allowed to go past lvl 10 in the game on a trial.

I have had MAJOR lag issues with Neriak, so much that even on "Extreme Performace" i can barely manage to run to the bank and back. While I love darklight wood, its a real problem having a character that operates here.

However my system is only a 1 GB with a 512 Meg Memory video card (Geforce 5800 GS) and i usually run at "Very high performance". I've never had any problems with any other zones, i can only recall getting slight lag in Kelethin but not enough to bother.

One think to note, if you really like having a Cape to wear, you can do the grender quest line in kelethin and get a cape reward at the end, which i really liked. Otherwise you will have to level up to 20 and purchase a cloak(or craft one?)

As far as Greater Faydark vs Darklight wood is concerned i wouldnt weigh one over the other. Only thing i've noticed that is major is the ability to harvest materials, as which EoF is really bad for.

Oh, I downloaded it too, got to lv 8 Berserker, then ran by a bright red "Guard", well I hit sprint and made a drive by at him. He did not chase me, got a little close, same thing. I walked onto the lift, and explored the city... which is huge btw.

The Guards that have you type in the npc you're looking for is confusing. I tried to type in Cooking, came up with nothing. On that note tradeskills confuse me all together :/ I have trapping, mining, wood chopping, gem collecting... so there's not a set craft you have to go along?

I bought the little bottles of new higher abilities from my trainer... but it would not let me use like the last 3 spell things.

All and all I'm still trying... but it's a confusing. I'm gonna read up on some guides.

The guards direct you to specific NPCs. The reason they failed to help you is that there is no NPC named "Cooking". The guards are only useful if you know who you are looking for.

As for tradeskilling; yes you have to choose a profession path and stick with it (for the most part). The skills you have listed there are your harvesting skills. You use those to gather raws (ore, pelts, foraged foodstuffs, roots, etc.) that you can then make into other items through the crafting interface. EQ2 Traders Corner has some excellent guides for beginners to help you get started tradeskilling in their "Tradeskill Guides" section.

Be aware the guards can also help you search by NPC type if the NPC has a tag. So you can ask for "Broker" and get directions.

edit: I'm having flashbacks to the guide clockworks in EQ1 Ak'Anon, lol.
