I've been away from EQ2 for some years and have been playing WOW. I understand EQ2 is more solo friendly and has added a bunch of solo content. I'm sure everybody asks which class is best to solo with. There's an excellent discription of classes on the returning players thread, so good job. From this thread, I've narrowed down to Monk and Necromancer. Both are supposed to be great soloers. I would think both are tough to keep alive, particularly at low levels. In the past, I have tended to tank and slug it out, like a paladin. I'm leaning towards the Necromancer at this time, but I haven't taken the seven+ hours to load the game yet. I'm trying to research the changes made since I've been away. The reason I'm playing againg is for the remarkable crafting system. My main would be used to gather ingredients and survive while doing so. Adventuring and grouping are secondary considerations at this time. In this light, what are the recommendations of the community on a solo class?

I have been playing this for about a month as a returning player too. You will find that just about any class can solo. I have a level 26 Dirge alt who supposedly isn't one of the better soloers, who soloed just fine.

Probably the conventional wisdom is that the Necro and Conjurer are the best soloers due to having the best pets.I currently play a Necro and a Shadow Knight. My Necro solos very, very well even at the lower levels. Certainly he solos better than a fighter class such as the SK.

I have each of them picking their own trade skills. My Necro is a scribe and my SK is an Armoror. I usually keep that at one level in trade above their adventure level for them to make items for their needs.

Yes, the crafting system is very unique and quite compelling.

My main used to be an SK (now L55), who did all the gathering. I created a zerker when EoF came out and he has been so much easier to solo he has become my main (now L59). Both now supply raws to my crafting-only alt who is L12 Defiler, L60 armourer.

You could always try both classes you are considering and see which you prefer. Play them both up to about L20 and you will get an idea how easy they are to solo. Then pick which one you want to be your main.

I have a level 32 necro and played a conjuror some, I think the necro is a slightly better solo toon. I also have a level 34 monk and soloed quite a bit with him and found he works well also. But that said any toon can solo in EQ2 some are just faster than others, and eventually you will want to group to finish some quests its just gonna happen.

I like my Necro over my monk for soloing, because it gives me a tank for my DPS and some distance in case things go down wrong and lots are pulled. Those extra few feet might mean the differece between life and death. Monks do have feign death, but I can hit sprint 100 percent of the time and not have it fail. ;)
