More memory or a new graphics card?Follow

#1 Jun 14 2007 at 6:27 AM Rating: Decent
Okay, so I just downloaded the play the fay thing and it is running "choppy". I mean nothing looks smooth but more as if they were lego people moving through the world. So Im going to get more memory and a new graphics card, but Im unsure which I ought to buy first beceause im not to sure if my problem is being caused mostly by ram or my graphics card. right now I have a pitiful 512 for memory (Ive been meaning to upgrade it, but it wasnt nessicary to play WoW so it slid from my mind) and some crappy stock video card. In fact heres what Ive been using-- [link] http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?docname=c00210099&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN [/link]
Sucks, I know, but hey its gotten the job done for 3 years now. It played COD back in the day and now it plays wow, but alas I need to move forward from the graphics of 2004.
Thank you all for your help and any advice is apprechiated (sp?).

While both certainly need upgrading, you will see the bigger performance increase from the memory upgrade. 1GB is an absolute must. If you can afford it I highly recommend that you should shoot for 2GB. It'll be like playing a new game. As for the video card, see about nailing down something with 256MB on-board at least. You don't need an absolute top of the line card. The memory upgrade plus a middle-of-the-road card will be enough to get you hoppin'.

I also have a laggy problem. I have a 4400 dual core processor and Im using a g-force 7900 pci - e card. I only have a gb of ram but i played WOW with max settings and other MMORPG'S, FFX1, LOTR, etc. Is the ram whats causing my lag or is there a chance crap is running in the background, I always try to make sure background junk is disabled or off when I play but I am having to play on custom lvls with the detail slider turned half way to be lag free outside of city and sort - od=f laggy in city. I s ram the prob?

Well, it's probably a combination of things, Gladiatorr. I mean, I just hope you aren't trying to play EQ2 at MAX settings like you did those other games. EQ2's graphics architecture was designed to be forward-looking with regard to technology. It can only be run on maximum detail and graphic levels on the best of the best hardware. I'm talking massively beasty systems. I have 2GB and a beefy vid card with 512 on-board for the GPU and I still wouldn't try to play EQ2 at max settings.

Upgrading to 2GB of RAM will give you a very noticeable performance boost. As for stuff running in the background, find yourself a good registry cleaner like HiJackThis and axe out some processes that look shady to you. Also, search around for some XP tweaks for performance. There are tons of little switches you can toggle for better gaming. And this may sound silly, but defrag. A lot of folks forget to do that every once and awhile and if it's been a few months you cold have some fragmentation going on. This slows the rate at which software access data on your hdd. When the client is trying to pull up object and texture info from the cab files on the drive, a fragmented drive can cause a big performance hit.

It's long been reported that (provided your video card will run EQ2 at all) if you can only upgrade one thing, go for memory.

I'm only running a 7600GS with 256 mb of RAM. I run on balanced mostly, though sometimes I'm forced to go down a setting. I recently upgraded my RAM from 1 gig to 2, and the difference is amazing. Almost all lag I experienced before is gone, and I'm running on balanced in all zones. Even Neriak, which is infamous for it's lag issues.

Yes memory is far more important to combat lag and zoning speed than a graphics card is. As said already, 1 gig for sure - 2 gig if you can afford it.
