Another dumb questionFollow

Ok I have purchased the EQ II game. I have tried downloading it and it won't install for me. Ok fine I needed a new computer anyhow so I got one that has dual processors and also the NVida(sp) graphics in it. I still can't get it to do the updates. It installs from the discs but that is it!

Do I need to do what? to get the game to install so I can play. I did manage to get it installed on my older puter with an ATI graphics card and even created two characters. I also managed to play a little on one but the lag was so bad that I finally gave up. I really want to play cuz i have some friends that play this game.

What can I do to get this game up and running on my computer.

Thanks

Ok, so you installed the base client off the discs. What exactly happens when you try to run it? "Won't install" isn't very descriptive. What should happen is you run the client, accept the license agreement, log in. The patcher should then scan and download any files it needs to update (if this is a new install this can take a long time). You should then be able to play. If this isn't happening, give us some details as to what exactly you are seeing.

Ok I installed the program from the discs. I was able to accept license agreement and log in. I was able to create a first char. then had to do a second char so that I would be in same area as my friend. It did updates and I was able to actually run the game but there was so much lag that I finally stopped playing that day. On a couple of other times when trying to log into the game it just locks up and won't let me get past log in screen. A live chat session with I think it was Sony Entertainment had me going to start menu and unchecking all boxes except microsoft (reg) I think it was. That made things even worse. Now I was able to pull up game today but still laggy.

On new computer it is running Microsoft Vista vs XP. On updates it just locks and does not open up beyond updates. The game seems to freeze and I have not been able to play.

Are there other drivers or patches that i can install to get this game up and running? I really want to play with my friend.

Is that more information? I hope so.

Couple more questions to clear things up:

1. Does it say scanning file or updating files in the upper left of the launchpad? If it says updating files, you should be fine. You just need more persistence. The update takes a long long long long long time. It seems like it is stalling, but it will eventually load.

2. Are you using dial up or cable? If you are using dial up, you can expect a REALLY REALLY REALLY long time.

3. Does an error message pop up? With Vista, a lot of the issues surround memory problems, but it will give you an error message.

Other than that, I can't think of anything else.

if you are running Vista, I would recommend finding a copy of Windows XP and a friend that can reformat your hard drive and install XP. I had 4GB RAM and ran Vista, and due to memory leaks (lets say...the equivalent of a screen door on a submarine), EQ2 kept crashing.

However, if you choose to keep with Vista, to get EQ2 to run properly, you will need to right click on the EQ2 icon and select from the drop down list "Run as Administrator". if you do not do this, the patcher will not run properly and will not update the necessary game files.

I'm running Vista with a single core P4 CPU, 2GB RAM, and a Geforce 8800 GTS 640m. I haven't had any issues with crashing on Everquest II.

You're 100% right about the running as admin... that damned UAC screws up the launcher. I turned mine off completely it so was annoying.

I envy you then. I could play for about 30 min, an hour if I was lucky before I got an Out of Memory message from EQ2. so I reinstalled XP, and am going to wait for the first SP to come out for Vista before re-installing it. decent OS, but there are so many things that Microsoft could have done to make it better (i.e. learning which programs the user authorizes, or having a "checklist" of sorts, so you don't have to click "Authorize" or whatever that damned button is EVERY SINGLE TIME!!). good idea, nice design, but, in my honest opinion, too many problems right now to make it worthwhile.

Thank you I will try and be more patient. I will also try running it with the Administrator thing.

I am running my games via a router via cell towers. Sigh, we will not have dsl out here for a long long long time!! even though some have it less than 2 miles away.

I will keep trying.

So there are no patches or drivers that I need to go looking for then.

Why on the one puter does it run so laggy that I cannot play. Just waiting for my char to move is crazy. I also play ffxi and I have a little bit of lag but nothing like this.....

Thank you again everyone. I appreciate reading your thoughts.

EQ2 is a lot more graphics intensive than FFXI. Plus you are not playing at a high connection speed. Plus, if you are in the city zones you will experience lag anyway. All of these things add up to a hard time for you.

And since you don't have DSL, that could be a main reason that your updating is taking forever. With dial-up, it will definitely appear that the update is stalling out. Heck, I have Earthlink and it stalls on my updates. I feel very bad for you right now. Good luck. Hope it will run eventually.

Yeah, the three things that affect EQ2 the most are memory (1GB bare minimum), video card capabilities, and connection. Vista's giving some peopel fits, too. I'll bet the biggest problem you're going to have is your connection.

I'm running EQ2 on vista with 2gig ram, nVidia 7900 and can run the game for hours upon hours for many days without a reboot. I do run the program as "XP" though. Maybe that's the difference.

Have you run a memory test? Maybe you've got a bad stick of memory. Oh, have you done a defreg of your hard drive lately?
