Ok alittle background first.

Like many, I was super excited when EQ2 first came out. When the newness wore off, I began to seen alot of issues, and for the sake of of this post I wont type them down, because you probably know what they were.

I was ok with that for awhile, but what got me was the constant changes every patch...it was like SOE wasn't happy with what they released. So I left, went back to FFXI...bad idea. The community was worse than ever, so I quit that aswell.

Well I jumped ship, like many did, and went to WoW. I enjoyed it for a time, hit level 70, got the high end stuff all within an 8 month period. Needless to say I'm ready for a switch, a more perminant (SP?) home so to speak. Which leads me to now:

Is EQ2 worth coming back to? Is SoE still changing the game on a patch to patch basis? I have so many questions but not enough space, I guess. So I will ask only a few-

A) Population. Is there still alot of people playing or is the game pretty much dead?

B) I have the kingdom of sky and the desert of flames exp. Am I missing any?

C) Is the game pretty much fix, or shall I say the devs happy with what they have done to the game?

D) And last but not least...Do you think the game has lasting power? I know it's 3 years old..basically saying, is it to late to join?

Help/anwsers would be appreciated.

A)Yes, last weekend they released a new zone, my computer nearly crashed becuase it was so corwded.

B)Echoes of Faydwer, it introduces two new races, a new continent, A new city on main lands. As well as a Achievement tree.

C)I'm not sure what it was like at first wiht updates so I can't compare that.

D)I started playing this January, I;m still learning but It isn't like theres no one to help me or to play with at lower levels.

The game is significantly improved since launch and the dev team is highly communicative and enthusiastic. I think the major changes are pretty much done, overall design has been stable for a while. Is it perfect? No game is. But it's good.

You're missing Echoes of Faydwer. Easily the best expansion yet, IMO. Lots of free content, expect a big patch :)

Oh, and there's a new expansion due in November - Rise of Kunark!

I don't think EQ2 is going anywhere, honestly. The population is good. We're seeing log of new people in the game, both returnees and refugees from other games. I'd say it is well worth at least one month's subscription to check it out.

If you're really not sure, start a Play the Fae trial (only works on a new account, so be prepared to lose your trial toon) and check out EOF. Seriously good stuff.

Hey, I'm just like you! I played EQ2 a long time ago..I switched to WoW because EQ2 couldn't stay the same. Now I'm thinking of switching back if EQ2 doesn't have a major patch every other day... I don't like that they took the old class system away..kind of ruins one aspect that I liked-being able to try out all the sub/classes with one character. But now you get your class spells at level 1? I know it's kind of strange to view this as a bad thing, but hey..It seems to me that EQ2 has been trying to morph into a different game completely. But I quit in January, 2005. Has much changed other than releasing a billion new expansions/adventure packs?

The dev team has changed alot, getting rid of group debt you no longer have to run back and get your soul shard when you die. There has been 3 expansions and 3 adventure packs. If you buy the EoF box you will get all the expansions for $40. You don't really need to buy the adventure packs, I leveled up without using them. The game really has turned around since launch where it really wasn't ready for launch imo.

Lots and lots. There are nine pages of update notes on the Official Forums, including major Game Updates and hotfixes. Some highlights:

  • The game was made more solo-friendly and over time a nice balance struck between solo and group encounters.
  • They took a hard pass at the entire combat and spell system. Reviews are mixed, but I think it's pretty well balanced. (Live update 13)
  • After dinking with it a lot, Tradeskills had a major revamp. (Game update 24)
  • More travel options were introduced as the world got bigger.

  • There's just too much to list, really.

Overall I think the game has been fine-tuned and grown nicely.

If you played at launch and are coming back, I think you'll be impressed.

PS: Three expansions, three Advanture Packs. Ther eare no more Adventure Packs scheduled, instead they're giving us free content (Like adding Neriak and surrounding areas this last Update), and the next expansion is due in November.

How many servers are there to play on?

How is the interaction between players? Is it easy to get help?

How is the learning curve compared to FFXI or Wow?

    Let's see... 23 servers.

People migrating from WoW constantly post on the friendliness and helpfulness of the community.

I can't comment on the learning curve because I've never played those games, but This Thread Over Here addresses it.

Did you download the trial yet??? Free to try :)

I'm also considering coming back - currently in the process of downloading the Fae Trial (11 hours left on the download?)

I left shortly after one of the tradeskill revamps - I was getting burnt out and the game was changing too much too often for me. Further, one of the updates must have changed the requirements, because my computer was unable to play the game as well as it had in the past (I may still have that problem)

currently play wow regularly - but that too has been burning me out - I had hoped to avoid the faction griding that I had to do in EQ but realized that exists there too..

It's possible I"ll try the trial, see how I like it - and if all goes well when I buy my new gaming rig it will be more than able to play EQ2 and I may return - my old guildies will be happy.

That's strange. There's been no updates that changed requirements....

there was an update to the direct X and sound drivers quite a few patches back (I'm thinking LU 14 or so) and from that point I had to play with the sound off or it would skip.

The problem was, while my sound card techincally met the specifics for it, it couldn't update to the newest driver correctly - so it never quite worked right after the driver update.
