Allakhazam's **** advertisements!!!Follow

#1 May 26 2007 at 10:09 AM Rating: Default
What is up with Allakhazam’s sexist, pornographic advertisements???? Since Allakhazam has taken over this site it has turned into a low class den of degenerates. Get a clue, Allakhazam…we’re not all desperate, sex starved low-lives! This is the last time I visit this site!

It would be much, much more proactive if you'd provide the link to the ad that's offending you so I can pass it on to the administrators.

FYI, Allakhazam has always run Allakhazam :)

You must be referring to the SinglesNet.net ones (i think). Yea, they are a bit on the racey side. I wouldn't say they qualify as pornography but they come really close on some of them.

That brings up an interesting point though. If you own a small business that is web based, and you need capital to keep your site running, how do you decide which advertisements you will and will not allow on your site? Technically running an ad for a dating website on a video game related website is smart thinking (believe it or not there are some gamers out there who are challenged in the art of wooing the opposite sex), but does the need for the capital generated by the advertisement dollars outweigh the moral obligation to providing your visitors with a smut-free site? Is there even a moral obligation?

The only concern I would have is due to the amount of minor children who we know plays the games that AllaK's supports and visits the site here. We had the same issue at OGaming and had those ads removed.

While I understand the reasoning behind the advertisements both financially for Allakhazam and target-wise for singlesnet, I believe that the the 99.9% nude woman is both unneccessary and inappropriate for a game site that caters to an audience that includes children (and married men who take a far too much heat from their wives for those ads). I just think that if Singlesnet is a legitimate dating site they could find a way to advertise dating without the nudity and innuendo.

not all adds on the site are ****, however, on occasision I run into a nice butt on the screen or an attractive woman in a swimsuit.

Honestly, A gaming site should have gaming advertisment. Maybe systems, or hardware/software upgrades. What ever.

I dont normally have an issue with it myself, but sometimes at work its difficult to have on the screen. No links as of yet, because I havent giving it much attention.

Using Firefox with No Script - Ad Block and Mike's NoAdHost I see virtually no adds, banners, popups , screen crawlers, blogads, google ads - zilch. Its free and simple to download - so why not at least give it a shot?

I think I know exactly which one you guys are talking about. The Singlesnet ads started out not quite so bad; just a woman in a skimpy outfit. But the one I have seen recently is the one showing a girl laying on her stomach. You only see her from the waist down, and her leg is bent up with high-heels pulling back her thong to show her naked bum. This would probably be considered non-work safe. It is annoying because it's a dating site that is basically being advetised in the same way a **** site would advertise, considering that the girl in the ad is obviously a model, and not one of the singles on their site.

I am not sure if their ads have been suspended pending review, because I was going to try to get the link for it, but now they are not coming up. I was getting them every other page, but none at all now.

Wake up? OH LORDY LORD! THE INTARWEB HAS ****?! OMG I HAD NO CLUE! THANK YOU FOR OPENING MY EYES! You tool.

On sites dedicated to socialization and interpersonal relationships, racy and borderline adult content is to be expected and children, if their parents are responsible, can be steered clear of those sites. The difference here is that AllaK's is a site dedicated to video games, specifically video games which are known to be played by families and children. Just like I can expect to have to monitor my child's activity on a site like MySpace, I shouldn't have to stand over his shoulder while he looks up information about a quest in EQ2. It'd be akin to having adult-content advertisements on Nickelodeon.com or pbskids.org. There is a social responsibility of the site owners to display content appropriate for their audience as a whole and to not just cater to a single base denomination. And while the community standards have certainly dropped by a far measure here since the merger, I would like to think that the site/admin standards haven't.

Calling me a tool? Man, that was quick. All I was trying to do was put my 2cents in about the subject. If ANY parent thinks they are going to keep girls in thongs away from the eyes of their kids, then they are not in the same world as I'm in. I was a "kid" before the internet and believe me, we still saw girls in skimpy attire if we wanted to. All I can say is that if I'm a tool, would you please clean me before you put me away. And don't forget to get into those little crevices; there might be some dirt in there that my 17 year daughter might see... :)

This really is a touchy subject. While I understand the points of view from all parties, I am torn as to which side I fall on.

On one hand, you have a site that is not owned by any of us. We can disagree with the advertisements all we want, but in the end it is up to the site owner to decide which advertisements are making him money. In essence, these advertisements are keeping the site running and by cutting off this resource Allas runs the risk of hurting the site (i.e. less admins, less attention to the game, etc. due to less money). From a purely business standpoint, those particular advertisements are an excellent ploy and are probably a huge money maker, hence the reason we were seeing more of them. This is all coupled with the fact that Allas offers a premium account service for a pittance ($10 for 3 months) which effectively blocks all advertisements. So if you really want to see this site continue to grow AND you don't want advertisements, do your part and kick in the $10.

On the other hand, this *is* first and foremost a video game site and, like Stugein and others have said, we should not have to worry about the chance of seeing risque pictures plastered on our screen. I know I have clicked the site during work hours, only to have an employee come around the corner to see a less than dressed female on top of the screen (Thank Bob I was good friends with the female employee). This, however, brings up the "you shouldn't be on the interwebs at work anyway" argument, so I will stop there. At home, though, is a different story. Stu's example about kids looking up quests said it best so I will not rehash it.

Well, there are both sides of my thought process. Like I said, a very touchy subject.

Yes, tool. "Wake up", as if you were bringing some great revelation to the table. All of our eyes must have been closed to the reality of how the world works until you came along to show us the way.

No, of course you can't protect kids against all exposure to objectionable content. It would be silly to even try. I'll be in the middle of watching a football game, a family sporting event, with my son when a commercial comes on talking about how Bob can satisfy his wife now and how he should call his doctor if his erection lasts more than four hours followed up by a half-naked chick trying to sell me beer. That doesn't mean I don't channel-block the Playboy channel when the kids are watching TV by themselves. And while you can't stop all exposure, you certainly don't enable it if you can help it and there are certain havens that one should expect to be free of such influences. Schools. Kids channels/websites. Family restaurants. Sites frequented by children supporting games known to be played by children and families. There are some places where one should be able to reasonably expect that they can safely rely on for the enjoyment of kids. If this was a Manhunt game community, it would be a totally different beast. But it's not.

Stugein, I understand your point of view and I understand the others point of view also. What I don't understand is why you are calling someone you don't have any idea who they "really" are a tool. Shouldn't you get to know the person before you bequest such a title on them? That's what really got my goat. Besides what right do you have calling anyone a tool if they are just adding their opinion to a forum. If you don't like what they have to say then just read past to the next post or with some constructive criticism explain why you think their idea is not as good as your idea. I think they used to call that a debate. And I don't recall Buffy calling Johnny a tool at the last debate I was at. I guess all of you bleeding heart liberals are the same, if it's not my way it's the wrong way. Glad America wasn't built on that logic. Too bad it's starting to feel that way now though. I'll get off the soapbox now and enjoy the rest of my day.

Update:

If you see an annoying ad, please screenshot it and mail it to me at calthine@allakhazam.com. Make the subject something I won't miss, like "annoying ad on EQ2 Allakhazam".

My instructions don't specify **** or not, just "annoying".

I'm reasonably sure that Allah's had some pretty intrusive ads prior to selling the site to whatevercorp.com but that's now water under the bridge.

Internet ad sellers really come off as scumbags and weasels, these guys would put **** on a Disney site if they got the chance. All we can do as users is to harden up our computers and hope the scammers and **** dealers remain one step behind the security.

Actually, in this case you *have* got a voice. Management has specifically asked for word of extra annoying ads, whether it's ultra-flashy, the kind that holds loading 'Zam pages until you click, full page garbage, or offensive butt-floss.

So right click on the add, select Properties, take a screenie of the ad and Properties box and send it to me, and you bet yer sweet buppy I'll pass it on.
