Well, there I was, bummed out by the letdown that is Vanguard, again looking for a MMORPG with which to while away the hours. As I perused various RPG forums, I began seeing a trend of more and more people speaking highly of EQ2, siting the various changes that have been implemented over the last couple of years.

This was indeed interesting. When I left, it was because of two primary factors. 1) Station Exchange (or the mere operational philosophy that would allow it to exist), and 2) lack of class identity - not enough compelling differences between classes of the same archetype.

It would seem that there has been much effort put into improving the latter, and that is very good news. While I still abhor the notion of Station Exchange, I must admit that time has tempered the zeal that accompanied my initial reactions to the matter.

Ok, I'll say it for you: *yawn*.

All that said, I think I'm ready to try EQ2 again and see if its present incarnation appeals to me. This leads me to a couple of questions:

1) I have several characters still on my account. The highest is a level 20 templar, with a few others in their teens. That's, of course, not very high level, so I'm more interested in ensuring I can keep their names than the actual characters, themselves. With that and the fact that their classes have likely undergone drastic changes since last I played them, would re-rolling them be a good idea? It's a fact that I'll be re-learning them, anyway. When I quit, I had none of the expansions. Yesterday I purchased the EoF retail box, so I should be up to speed with that.

2) All my existing characters are on Lucan D'Lere. Is that still one of the more popular servers at this point? I had considered re-rolling on Antonia Bayle, but I would only be doing so to end up on a server with a higher population. I prefer an RP server.

I'll be looking for other low level players to adventure with, so if anyone on either AB or LD has a good, healthy guild that fits that bill, let me know.

First of all, welcome back. There have been plenty of people just like you that have revisited EQ2 in the past few months and are now enjoying the game more so than ever. Now, onto your questions.

1. All of your characters will be right there waiting for you. If you want to keep their names, but not keep their class, simply delete the character and reroll another one. Unless someone is creating a character at the same exact time you are and chooses the same exact name, you will be fine. And yes, rerolling is an excellent idea for a few reasons. They redid both islands and I think they are masterfully done. They are much more exciting than they used to be. Furthermore, after two years you are probably going to be rusty and trying to relearn your class, even in your teens and early twenties, can get frustrating. The first 20 levels are going to fly by anyway. I have rolled so many alts that I can get there in about 8-10 hours of playing time. There are so many quests to keep you busy through those first 20 levels that it is sometimes a good idea to turn off combat xp and enjoy the scenery. But I digress. Sorry about that. Smiley: grin

2. Both LD and AB are very popular at the moment. I believe AB has a bigger population, but both servers are excellent. I play on LD and I know Stugein plays on AB. Depending on which one you choose, look either of us up. We will be more than happy to get you in our respective guilds and show you the ropes.

That's very kind, Mearyk. I may just do that. Thank you very much for the info. It looks like I will, in fact, be re-rolling. It's just a matter of where. It's really all about which has the higher low-level population right now. All things being equal, I would likely just stay on Lucan.

One more question, is the Station Players search engine a reliable means of determining if a particular name has been taken on another server?

Yes. If you search by character name using EQ2Players, you will get both the exact matches and any iterations of the name.

Example: Bobby would return bobby, bob, bobbys, bobbylou, etc.

Neriak was just opened as a starting city yesterday and there is an adundance of freshly made toons running around. If you don't mind being on the dark side you'll want to start there.

Of course as people clear out of the newly added areas they'll be exploring content in all the same zones as before, so you could start in any city and eventually be grouping with the Arasai and other Neriakians.
