Treasure Chest....When does it decide?Follow

#1 May 07 2007 at 2:25 PM Rating: Decent
I was driving around and thinking about this scenario. When does the Loot inside the Treasure Chest become the Loot that it is? Like for instance if inside a Chest there is Feysteel Cluster and <Scroll Name> Adept I. At what point does the Randomization set in? At the time the Chest Appears or when you open it? Just a thought my feeble mind came up with, I'd like to hear some feedback on some other peoples thoughts :)

Why would it make a difference whether the chest contents were determined when the chest drop or when it was opened?

Just a matter of curiosity, Truthfully it does not matter, just wondering

Yeah, I'm not entirely sure. If I were a betting man I'd say the loot was randomized when the chest is generated. I'd guess several checks happen when the mob is killed:

*deathblow struck
*random check to see if there will be a chest drop
*random check to see what type of chest it will be
*loot table is determined based on previous check
*random check to determine what loot from that chest type/mob's loot table is presented

EQ1 was fun in that the loot was determined when the mob was spawned and you could sometimes determine what the mob would drop based on how it appeared (That golem carrying the big sword would in all likelihood drop that big sword for you, that one zombie that is glowing is probably carrying a lightstone/torch, etc.).

I very much like the idea that the item you get from the mob has to do with items it is, or likely would be carrying.

The feyiron breast plate that drops off a fairy in EL is always a little funny. So where exactly did that little dude have it tucked away? hope he wasn't keestering it!

... I always imagined the chest loots were better on a well contested fight... (those always seemed to be when one or more of the team dropped below 2 bars for some period and power was sorely tasked before mob death) but you all know what hearsay and imagination are like :)

I have no prior knowledge of how this system is programmed, but as a programmer for over 20 years I would do it at chest open. From a programatic point of view there is no need to ID the actual content of what is in the chest until someone opens it. When it drops, the program would need to "mark" the chest with different variables (i.e. Named NPC or not, what level NPC, etc etc). Hell, as I write this I changed my mind 3 different times. It could be done at anytime it's 100% up to the programmer(s). As with almost anything, there is more than one way to skin a cat.
