Different class use the stats differently. In general it's something like this:

STR - How hard you hit
AGI - How easily you dodge incoming hits
STA - Your hitpoint pool/resiliency
WIS - Resists
INT - Spell damage

Now, the stats break down a little more specifically with regards to your class. Notice how I didn't mention power pool. Different classes get their power pool from different stats. Shadowknights (and most fighter) get the bulk of their power pool from STR, but a portion of it also comes from INT whereas a priest class like a templar gets the majority of their power pool from WIS.

As for a ranger specifically, I'll have to defer to someone with more subject matter knowledge than myself. I've honestly never really played a ranger significantly. Hopefully someone else can give you better advice on an AA route.

Each line supports one of the 5 main traits;

STR - Strength
AGI - Agility
WIS - Wisdom
INT - Intelligence
STA - Stamina

As you work your way down a particular line several things will happen.

First, each point you put into the first skill will raise your score for that attribute by a few points. So for example for each point you put into the first slot in the AGI line (agility is your primary stat as a ranger) your agility will go up a few points.

Once you have put a few points into the first slot, the next slot down will light up and you can put points there. This second slot will give you a new combat art based on a specific weapon (or item) type. It might be a new melee attack with a piercing weapon for example. You'll start with the skill at app1 and each point placed in this slot will improve the quality of the spell up to the master level.

When you have a few points in this second slot, the third slot will light up so you can begin to place points there.

The third slot is usually a passive effect. For example you might see decreased damage from a specific weapon type as you place points in this slot. When you have a few points in the third slot, the forth and final slot in the line will light up.

This final slot, when purchased, will give you a nice effect that will round out the line.

Thats basically how they work but as far as what you should choose... no one can really make that decision for you. AAs are a way of personalizing your character to make him/her play more the way you want him to and no one can tell you what you want.

I'll give you an example though...

I play a warden and there are several ways to customize a warden and make them much different from the basic "off the shelf" model.

Some folks have gone down the STR & AGI lines and turned their druid into a "Melee Warden" - a healer who is able to stand and tank mobs as well as most scouts and many tanks!

Other players have gone down the INT line in order to maximize the casting damage output from the warden's selection of nukes and DoTs, turning them into a DPS warden.

Still others have focused on the WIS line in order to make the warden's already formidable healing skills even greater

So you see, what you need to do is figure out what you want your ranger to be and work those AA lines.
