how do i get out of big head mode?

you just type the command /cutemode while in the game. I personally never liked the look, but I know several people who claim to play all the time in "cute mode".
This mode was around before today?

sadly, yes. it has been around for (at least as far as I know) about a year and a half, if not longer. really quite annoying if you ask me, but that's just my opinion.
I believe it was an added as a command just before Desert of Flames came out. I could be wrong because it was added FOREVER ago.
