Mage defense questionFollow

Hey all, I posted this on SOE's forum with no luck. I'll try here.

I've recently started an Illusionist and was wondering if it's common practice to keep your defense and melee skills leveled up. I know every little bit helps but I don't want to be worrying about rising my defense if it's really not going to make a big difference in higher levels. I ask this because in EQ1 (the dreaded EQ1 commparrison, sorry) I would spend hours just raising my Clerics defense and 1 hand crushing level and I hated it.

Basically just curious if anybody does worry about their defense and melee skills and if so do you seem to see it make a difference compared to other players/alts that do not have their defense up to par? I'm assuming in later levles your weapon is pretty much never used. I'm willing to sacrifice time, effort, and deaths (I'm a very causal gamer, that's why I say sacrifice) if it will really make a difference.

Thanks

As a 70 wizard i'll answer this.

NO

don't waist your time. All the defense in the world won't help with the tissue paper you'll be wearing. And auto attacking is a big mistake too. Solo you don't want to be toe to toe and grouping you don't want to be near the mob either because of AOEs. If you are interested in solo ability, get your roots/mezes Adept III or mastered, but if that mob gets free... you'll get ONE shotted. No defense, no resists, no parry, no reposital, no chance. Keep any and all roots/mezes on the mob at all times and only use big hits, there by reducing the amount of times you hit the mob and the chances of your root breaking.

Are you crazy?!?! Yes, to raising defense and No to raising melee skills...or at least not as emphasized. I can survive hits from mobs just fine in my "tissue paper" armor, even some hits from raid mobs. You being a crowd control type are going to acrue alot of hate very fast and it's very important you remain alive to regain control and help yourself/group/raid out. As you level the hits will come and your personal skill will get maxed out so don't sweat that too much, though as you are leveling up go out and cast on a group or two of green single downs to help speed up the skill building.

A general rule of thumb for any mage should be to have 36%-38% avoidance self buffed/geared (no potions) and to aim for 40+% which will allow for greater survivability. With the assortment of gear there is out there it can easily be achieved without sacrificing intelligence and power.

of course its important to raise defense since every single % of avoidance can mean that you'll stay alive. So highest defense possible is a must have for everyone, but I dont see any pros in skilling melee, except if ure planning to be a spellblade.

I try to keep it maxed. I had a hard time at lower levels but now that I am 51 it is maxed. Now when I solo I can have my pet tank 1 mob while I tank the other so to speak. This works ok with Solo mobs and most green heroics.

Far as melee skills go I wouldn't worry to much about them.

Defensive skill is a MUST. regardless of the class. even healers and mages. the difference is literally life and death. when soloing its not the BIGGEST deal for a caster to max that skill out but the second you get into a raid situation and get hit with an AoE physical damage you'll die while everyone else is still kickin with 50% of there HP still around. I say yes to maxing defense. also.. melee... heh. thats up to you. really wont make a big difference in the over all picture in any situation

Ok, i gotta agree with rip on this one

as a mage in EQ2 your defense skills dont really make a difference. Yeah if you have a avoidence thats maxed out your gunna evade a hit, but in all honesty a mage shouldnt ever take the hit in the first place. If your in a group your laying your detaunts and nukes and shouldn't ever pull agro. If your soloing you should lay a root on every 2-3 casts to make sure it doesnt break. so in the long run i say no it doesnt matter. And your weapon, its more for stats than attacks

I am a 64 Necro and I solo quite a bit so keeping melee and defense up are quite important for me.

Considering most Raid mobs in ROK hit for 15-25k (phara hit me for 32k last week, sadly), aim for resists rather than outright defense.
