Illusionist QuestionsFollow

I'm posting this here and not in the Mage forums because my questions will jump around alot, not all regarding just Illusionist questions. I'll attempt to make this as organized as possible.

Here are my questions and observations. FYI, I just started my Ill. last night and am currently lvl 8 and did really well with him for the first 5-6 lvls.

1. Is there a trick to soloing? I must have died 12 times in the 2 hours I played, partly due to the extreme amount of resists I experienced.

2.Does anybody else see their spells resisted alot for this class?

3.Do some classes get a better chance at recieving certain drobs/rare harvestables than others? I ask this because although I died alot, I already had to Legendary drops, 2 adepts for my class, and 6 (yes 6 rares) harvested. This was from causal harvesting also, mostly from running back and forth from the mendor.Just curious if there was some secret that SOE installed that automatically felt bad for me for choosing an illusionist, therefore I get really lucky on finding items; sort of like an inscentive (sp) for playing the class.

4.Is there a certain spell we recieve that makes soloing a whole lot easier? I really want to play this class because in the 2 months I've played I've only seen one other Illusionist and I haven't seen her if a few months. I'm beginning to understand why alot of people don't play this class.

5. Not really a question but it's also frustrating to want to spend the whole 40 silvers I have on a little better chest armor than a 4 mitigation dress I have, but there was a whole 5 items on the broker all well over 1 gold for lower than lvl 10 items. Ok, there is a question. Is the market for an Illusionist really that bad?

I'm on LD if that makes a difference for any of my questions. Thanks

With all classes, the most important aspect of spell (or combat art) casting is to keep your important spells upgraded. Upgraded spells will increase the effect of the spell (more dmg or bigger heals for example) and also reduce the rate of resist.

Each spell comes to you as app1 (apprentice 1) which is the lowest quality version of the spell. But you have a variety of upgrade options for each spell. You can buy the next quality up (app2) from NPC salesmen located in the spell shops within all the ethnic villages. This minor upgrade represents only a tiny upgrade in quality (1 step) and can be avoided for all but your least useful or important spells.

Your 2nd option is to buy mob dropped or player made upgrades in the form of app (apprentice) and ad (adept) grade spells from the broker. These will be available in a variety of quality levels as follows:

app3 & app 4 (player made)
ad1 (mob dropped)
ad3 (player made from rare harvest)
master1 (mob dropped in ornate chest)

In addition, you can get lucky and win a adept 1 drop from a mob chest that just happens to be a spell for your class but this doesn't happen often!

If you think you might enjoy crafting, you could begin by crafting your own app3 and app4 quality spells and even make ad3 spells when you have the rares.

Your final option is a free upgrade of one spell to master 2 quality every 10 levels beginning at lvl 14. when you ding the 4 level, you will be offered one free upgrade from a list of 4 spells current to your level.

Regarding chest drops and rare harvests, no there is no secret, you are at the mercy of the RNG (random number generator) and it seems to always run in streaks... some days you eat the bear and some days the bear eats you!

Regarding armor and weapon upgrades, don't spend a lot of money in the early game. You will be through the 1st 20 lvls or so in a heartbeat and so you won't see a lot of bang for your buck. This also applies to the spell upgrades... if you can't afford to upgrade a spell now don't fret - you'll be using a different version of it in a few lvls anyway! (spells within a line get changed out every 14 levels)

Hope all this helps you out and welcome to EQ2!

1) I've only played my Illusionist up to 19 so far. But I can tell you that soloing is much easier by using your pet to pull/tank. Don't spam nuke spells right off the bat. Let it gain some aggro first and cast some dot spells then start doing HOs and nuking.

2) No, I don't see my spells really getting resisted. Are you trying to attack things a lot higher in level than you?

3) Not that I know of. Though it feels like they hate you later on when you are wanting certain class pieces to drop and they never do. In fact, seems like the stuff they drop specifically targets classes you do not have in the group sometimes. :p

4) I love my Illusionist and I think I can solo with her well. And no, I didn't twink her out. Best thing is to use your pet and use your mezzes/roots if you are killing solo groups. Or, keep your pet on solo mobs and nuke em. They should be defeated rather easily at your level even without upgraded spells.

5) Well, much of that comes from transmuting. People starting out in that tradeskill buy lower tier stuff to transmute and get that skill up. Go find quests to do at your level and you should have much more money than that.

I'm on LDL too. Let me know if you have any further questions and I'll try to answer them.

EDIT: And have you been resummoning your pet every time you level? It won't automatically be your level if you don't do that and might make it harder for soloing.

Thanks for the quick replies guys/gals. I've been reading other forums and it seems my strategy has been all wrong. I've also read that Illusionists aren't really used for crowd control (unless things get really out of control), but rather as a DPS/buffing support, which sounds a little awkward. I've also read to have the pet attack with ranged attacks while mob is stunned/rooted; how do I do that? I just see the common attack, defend, etc.

Thanks

Yeah, the coercer is used for crowd control but illusionists can do it as well in a pinch. They still seem pretty fun though so don't give up!

There's some sort of command to type in to tell your pet to melee or go ranged. I'm in a hurry so I can't look it up right now but hopefully this at least sends you in the right direction.
