A note on "who can solo"Follow

#1 Mar 08 2007 at 10:24 AM Rating: Decent
I’ve read several posts in my short EQ2 experience (little over a month of play time) on “who can solo?” or “who is the best at soloing?” and I just want to give others who are new or thinking about joining my opinion on this matter. Nearly everyone will say every class can solo. This is true and others will even elaborate and say “though not every class as good as others,” which is true in its own sense. Here is my experience with the soloing of different classes.

First off I’m a casual gamer and like to do quests therefore I don’t have great equipment or a network of friends that can help me with the Heroic quests or other circumstances where you usually receive the best equipment or hordes of money. Also I’m not able to play on the weekends so I miss out on the “hot” nights for grouping. Basically I’m an average gamer with average gear and this is my opinion. Yes all classes can solo yet it depends on how you like your solo experience to go

SCOUT TYPES: (my Brigand experience) Also, I’d add Monks in this category although many would disagree, due to the low mitigation of monks and their excellent dps.

Good aspects: Can sneak and travel almost anywhere, although I’m sure in later levels the number of mobs that can see through sneak are considerably more. Fights end rather quickly meaning you can rack up exp quicker than, lets say the cleric classes.

Bad aspecs: There is a lot of DPS classes out their, ie other scout classes plus a few Warrior classes, making grouping slightly difficult since dps seems the easiest spot to fill (I know, this comment isn’t about soloing but still good to mention).Low hitpoints and lower mitigation than the warrior classes means multiple opponents can be seriously challenging if you’re not killing fast enough.

Financially: I’ll probably get flamed for this but you really only have to worry about good weapons to be successful as a solo scout since you will be stunning, knocking down, kiting if needed, and fighting behind the mob. Same in a group since hopefully you wont be tanking. You’re job is dps in group and solo, so dps. Don’t get me wrong, armor is always important but if you’re poor like me I always make sure my weapons are up to par and then worry about my armor.

WARRIOR TYPES: more precisely the tanking types

I don’t have a lot of experience here and this is from lower levels of tank experience and from witnessing tanks in groups.

Good aspects: You’re a tank, tanks can take one hellof a beating meaning although your mob isn’t dying, stunned, getting interrupted as often as the scout may do, your health isn’t falling as quickly either. I’d assume that in a similar incounter between a scout and a tank, the scout would finish the mob off quicker but would ultimately have less hp’s after the battle, I could be wrong though.

Bad aspects: You can’t sneak which makes soloing in my opinion a little less fun since you’re usually stuck pulling mobs at entrances or fighting your way through a dungeon. This could be a plus since the accomplishment factor of knowing you battled your way through an area to get somewhere is more challenging than simply sneaking there. Also, not being able to sneak makes traveling more stressfull (I can’t put sneak on, hit auto run through Nek forrest and go get a beer with a warrior).

Financially: Warrior seem like a very expensive class to me. They wear two hats unlike the scout. You’re face to face, taking blows and dishing out blows which means you need top notch armor and weapons. The weapons for dealing damage while solo and the armor since soloing and when you do group you don’t want to be the tank who…well can’t tank.

CLERIC TYPES:

Good and bad aspects:

In my opinion the cleric is the most important member of any group and should be respected for that and for one other reason…soloing as a cleric sucks. Yes, clerics can solo but I personally don’t like always saying “will you die already” while I’ll solo. Clerics solo well but the battles seem to take ages compared to scouts and warriors. In my experience I can kill 3 mobs in the time it takes for my cleric to finish off one. I really don’t understand why those who seek to solo would choose a cleric, this is just my opinion I’m sure many don’t understand why I’d do the things I do.

Financially: More expensive than scout, yet less expensive than warrior. As a cleric you probally have low hit points, dismal strength, and dps is foreign word to you. This means you need one bad **** weapon (expensive or hard to get) or rely on your spells for damage and your armor to hold up. I like to think of my clerics weapon as a d.o.t. spell. Therefore you need good armor to stay alive or you’re going to be burning valuable mana on constantly healing yourself.

As far as the other classes go I have very limited or no experience what so ever so I’ll leave those alone till I get more experience from them, or if anybody else has more advice on those classes than “anybody can solo” please post it here for those newer to the game as well as for me:)

Once again I’d like to note that none of these comments are made from a high end character, just my experience as a lower end character for these classes. I’m sure the above classes have certain skills or spells that I am yet to receive that could make the soloing experience a lot easier.

And that’s all, this post has become a lot longer than I intended it to be. Good luck all and hope my opinion helps a little to those wondering more about the solo experience.

Forgot to say this, I put the financial comments in there not only for the cost of running that class, but the amount of time it takes to get that equipment. For example the scout could spend less time looking for decent weapons compared to the considerable amount of time it would take a warrior to find good pieces of armor for all those slots, meaning a warrior will spend more time looking for upgrades than actually soloing for exp. Granted if done right both exp and upgraded equipment goes hand in hand. Thanks
