I am now a lvl 23 weaponsmith and all the advanced books that I got have Steel weapons that I can make , but I can not find steel. There is none at the broker and I spent an entire day mining in TS - got over 200 things of carbonite (which is great since I can use it) but still NO STEEL.
Where do I get steel??

Am I just being a baby or is being a weaponsmith rather difficult? and expensive since I need loads of carbonite and bioled leather at this stage and end up buying from the broker at not so chep prices

Steel's a PITA. It's harvested in Thundering Steppes and Nektulos Forest. It's rare, lol.

It's not so much that Weaponsmith is hard, because other classes like Woodworker and Carpenter have a similar lack of recipes. It's that the spell-making classes get a ton of recipes and more Pristine Bonuses.

Edit: I never ever buy raws. Harvest everything!! Also, do tradeskill writs (city tasks) and you won't be as broke.

Everything in this post is 100% true. Steel, IMO, is definitely the hardest rare to find. I'm talking like 1 in 500 rare. It's not worth the trouble of making a steel weapon for profit. As Calthine said, do TS writs. You will make more money in a shorter amount of time this way.

And harvest everything yourself unless you find a helluva deal on the broker. Most zones have no shortage of animal dens and the like.

Okay now I know I have a fortune in steel. I kept getting this in TS & Nek and have about 10 in the bank!! My hardest has been Feysteel and Ebon. Took me for ever to get 1 of each.

I am beginning to think certain players have an affinity for certain rares. I pulled 5 ebons in about 3 days and only 2 or 3 steels in a months time. Go figure.

When my Woodworker was T5 I could harvest rubies like no one's business. (This was before they increased the rare rate, so maybe one every couple weeks). But could I get a Cedar? noooooooo

I've often wondered if there was something that made it more difficult to get the rares I was going to craft with as apposed to the other rares. IE...I find root, leather, loam, and soft metal rares all the time, but the hard metals that I want for crafting seem to be few and far between.

I don't have any real basis for this theory other than my limited experience, but it does seem strange that I can find multiple loams, leathers, and roots when I really want hard metal.

On the plus side, all of those "unwanted rares" provide lots of coin for the hard metals that I seldon find while harvesting.

It's Gamer's Murphy. The same ruleset that determines that Masters for your class will never drop in a group, unless there are two of that class, then you'll loose the roll.

Okay at the risk of sounding totally stupid!
What is PITA?
The writs that you mentioned where do I get them from? I have been doing orders that I get inside the tradeskill area.
I dont want to make steel weapons so much for profit as for people that I play with that can do with some decent weapons.

PITA = Pain In The ***

The rush orders and work orders are the writs we are referring to. Sorry, old habits die hard.

As to your noble cause of making steel for friends, you will just have to keep at it or break down and buy it from the broker. There is no easier way. Sorry.
