Problem with HO on my Defiler..Follow

I created a Defiler last week and have leveled him up to 8. However.. my problem is that when I hit Heroic Opportunities.. the associated spell icons in my hot bar flash as they're supposed to but when I click them nothing happens. The spells don't cast and those spells are basically useless until the fight is over leaving me to nothing but melee and healing.

I have no problems using HO on my brigand.. so what am I doing wrong with my Defiler? Does it work differently from class to class?
