I use to play EQ1 a long time ago but then i joined the military for 5 years and now finally I'm out and am interested in starting EQ2, however late from game release. I've been doing a lot of research and still have not bought the game because before I play I like to have everything(that can be possible be done) planned out. But I can't seem to find the answer to a truly simple question.

Can any race be any class?? I know everyone knows but in the prior game trolls could only be sk,sha, and warrior. For example, could I make a troll wizard (as dumb as it may sound I like to play rarely chosen race/class combinations but in EQ1, they were rare.(gnome war, erudite pally, gnome cleric) speaking statistically these combinations are not very useful but for some reason I like this kind of disadvantage gameplay and customization.

If someone knows the answer I ask you to please take a moment and post. If there are class/race restrictions then if you could paste a URL containing the information. Thanks everyone.

Any race can be any class.

Though good races cant be evil classes and vice a versa. So no Troll Paladins or High Elf Necromancers. I am sure someone will mention that you can betray a Troll SK over to Qeynos and become a Paladin but that is kind of on the periphery

There are certain races that have to start out "good" (Qeynos)or "evil." (Freeport). They can later betray and switch to the other city, but they have to start out in that city. Likewise, there are certain classes you can only play if you belong to a particular city, and those you CAN'T take with you when you betray--when you betray, you become a new class if you belong to a city-specific class.

For example, under the scout archetype, there are a couple neutral classes (troubador and dirge) which can belong to either city, and then there are a couple city-specific classes. Rangers can only belong to Qeynos, and Assassins can only belong to Freeport. They are sorta like flip sides of the coin, however--they share a lot of abilities in common, and if you betray to the opposing city, your class becomes the class that is the counterpart of your original class. If you start out as a Ranger and betray to freeport, you become an Assassin. If you start out as an Assassin and betray to Q-town, you become a Ranger.

Here's the division:

Qeynos:
Conjuror (counterpart: necromancer)
Illusionist (counterpart: coercer?)
Monk (counterpart: bruiser)
Mystic (counterpart: defiler?)
Paladin (counterpart: shadowknight)
Ranger (counterpart: Assassin)
Swashbuckler (counterpart: Brigand)
Templar (counterpart: Inquisitor)

Freeport:
Assassin (counterpart: ranger)
Brigand (counterpart: swashbuckler)
Bruiser (counterpart: monk)
Coercer (counterpart: illusionist?)
Defiler (counterpart: mystic?)
Inquisitor (counterpart: templar)
Necromancer (counterpart: conjuror)
Shadowknight (counterpart: paladin)

Either:
Berserker
Dirge
Fury
Guardian
Troubador
Warden
Warlock
Wizard

The point of this? In answer to your question, yes, any race can be any class, so long as the character is alligned with the right city for that class. For example, a dark elf (initially alligned with Freeport) cannot be a Ranger (ranger being a Qeynos class) until he or she betrays and becomes a citizen of Qeynos. So if you wanted a Dark Elf Ranger, you would initially roll up a Dark Elf Assassin, and then betray to Qeynos, at which point you would become a ranger. If you wanted a Halfling Shadowknight, you would roll up a Halfling Paladin and then betray to Freeport. I believe DSD has a Dark Elf Monk, actually, for which she had roll a Dark Elf Bruiser and then betray to Qeynos.

I have a wood elf monk, but I did start out a dark elf swashbuckler. In order to get her to be a swashie, I originally rolled a dark elf brigand and then betrayed her. There is a line of quests you can start in order to betray. After the city you start out with throws you out you will live for a time in a neutral zone (blanking on the name as I havent had coffee yet.) From there you will work your faction of the opposing city up until they allow you to become a citizen, wherein you can then change to the class you originally wanted. Keep in mind that if you decide to betray, any spells you have bought better than what you were originally given will not roll over to your new class and all your new spells will be the ones given to you by the game. In other words, if you know you're going to betray, dont bother buying some of the better spells, like adept 3's and master spells. =)

Welcome to Norrath, 500 years later ;)

The only restriction would be that there is at this point no betraying with the Fae. They cannot play any evil classes, only the good counterparts.

It's coming, but at this point if you chose Kelethin as your beginning city (that would include the races that are not Fae but can also pick Kelethin as such), you cannot betray. So for instance a Shadowknight Fae is not possible.

I have one more question if anyone has the time to reply but if you dont then its ok.

In the server that you(responding person) play on have you seen or are there a lot of Troll Wizards? Im pretty curious about this question because I enjoy playing rare class/race combinations as said before. Also, not only troll wizards but troll mages?

Again, everyone thanks for the prior posts, I cant explain how helpful its been.

On Najena I've seen very few "large-body" mages. Some folks enjoy the small initial racial INT edge that other races get. However, that initial boost is soon overcome by stat-boosting gear. So in the long run, it doesn't matter which race you pick, as long as you have fun with it! :)

When you get to Najena, look up me and my guildmates. We can help you get started with advice, guidance, and mentoring.

See you there. :)

Madigan and TutanBriarpaw, thanks for the information guys. I will check out the link you pasted! For the matter with Najena server, that's sounds like it should be (few big body mages). Perhaps it's because the low INT and AGI with other factors not dealing with stats but with the look of the character. Of course high elves, wood elves, humans and so forth look pretty cool with robes and spellcaster gear but ogres and trolls (pretty ugly from the get go) dont really match with spellcastergear but more appealing with platemail and such. Again, as always I appreciate the feedback.

Of course I have run into another problem and dont know the answer to it. In the first EQ, you could download a "Zone Connecting Map" ( tashika eqatlas.com or something). I have went to an eqatlas.com like site and looked at many of the maps and seem pretty reliable (except for locs, that could use a little help but Im not paying to use these websites so i am still 100% satisfied) *hell for that matter, they could put 2 dots on the map and say,"thats the entrance and thats the exit" and the only thing you could say would be "well, there ya have it". Well anyways, if you know of a place that has the overall map of norrath with boxes for zones and lines for connections like they use to have for EQ1 then please post the link. (if the expansion lands are not included thats ok)

Again thanks for the help everyone.

P.S.- (to TutanBriarpaw) If I find my way to the Najena server I will send a tell. Thanks for the kindness.

Here is a site for all your interface needs. Here
You will see on the top left a link for eq2maps. I don't know how I was able to play without them.

I've already researched all the quest that I want to do until lvl.13 but of course without a good eqatlas site it would be difficult to accomplish. However, the website that you recommended is really well designed. It truly has about all the information you could use. Of course, the names of the mobs, npc's,notable spot, etc. which appear below the map would be much easier to find if they were alphabetically organized but when a site is that detailed, there just isnt anything you can say, complaints or otherwise. Zarhime
Scholar, thanks for the tip, when I buy the game and start that will cut time in about half.
