Why turn off combat xp?Follow

#1 Jan 06 2007 at 2:02 PM Rating: Decent
Hi, new to the forum and the game (doing the trial)...

I have read people saying stuff about turning off combat xp to go and do things...what is the benefit of turning it off? Why not just leave it on while you're out killing mobs? Just levels you up, yes?

EQII has more content than you can shake a stick at. You could level through a zone without experiencing it all. Some people turn off combat xp and quest, explore so they can ease through the content.

Farming, that's a factor too.

Sometimes it is handier to stick at a certain level so you don't outgrey the mobs that are interesting to kill. For city writs is one example.

Especially with the current new skills (transmuting and tinkering), I can imagine that there are several players that want their low lvl characters to stay that way so they can farm lots of adepts and armour. (those drop a lot at lower levels I believe)

As much as I've tried reading guides and forums..clealry I don't know enough yet...because I don't see how farming is affected by leveling...?

Thanks for the answers though guys. I'll go slow leveling I guess.

Farming is affected by level because greys will not drop chests, though they will still drop body loot (lore quest items, plant food, reverse writ items, etc.). Since most of the good drops come in chests, it's usually not worthwhile to farm greys.

Really, though, in general that's not a very good reason to turn off combat exp, since higher-tier mobs drop items worth more than lower-tier ones. Unless you've hit a point where you can easily solo a specific instance for heroic-level drops (Chamber of Immortality being perhaps the most obvious example) or are farming for something in a specific level range, like adepts for transmuting, you're better off simply farming the highest-level mobs you can easily kill.

If a particular skill is lacking and needs to be raised I'll usually cut off combat exp right before I lvl so that it can catch up.

Sometimes if I'm gonna be fighting a group of mobs that I can't normally beat I'll gain exp up to the point where one more kill will restore my HP's, disable combat exp, and then enable it when I need it so I regain health in the middle of the fight.

on my first character, my goal was to level as quick as possible. beleiving that most of the content was geared for higher levels. When EoF came out, it was a completely new experiance allowing for all levels to explore. When that happens I created a new chatacter and disabled combat XP from the start. The XP gained is from quests, named kills, and exploring. It helps to keep the AA's in ballanced with the levels. It takes longer to level, but worth it IMO.

Ive got a level 18 Guardian with over 10 AA's. Ive found that my higher level alt, level 45 has almost as many AA's as my main. simply because of the amount of content geared towards mid level toons.

Turning off combat XP is a good way to catch up on your quests and explore the land before you out grow it.

I am a quest "Nut" and some of the quests will only be given to toons at certian levels or from chest drops. So that I have the chance to get "ALL" quests available I will turn off the combat exp at arount 80%.

In PvP people were locking XP at certain lvl ranges to strenghten up before moving into higher tiers...and to farm kills before moving up as well. Some people will also turn it off to stay in a particular lvl range to further enjoy a zone before greying it out. Basically it's to enjoy the content at it's intended lvl range. Mentoring is fine, but still leaves you a bit overpowered.
