I picked up tinkering as a secondary skill on EQ2, but it doesn't seem to be as in-depth as some of the other crafting stuff. Is there any place to find any good info on tinkering?

Im just curious if I should continue to keep tinkering because so far it doesn't look like I can create anything useful for my Ranger. The items for tinkering look more like a waste of time.

In the end, is it worth doing? Are the items really that cool? I already have a transmuter. Would love to hear from others before I take on yet *another* task. I'm leveling pretty slow as it is, already!

been offline for awhile or i would have responded to this sooner. in case your question hasnt been answered, i find tinkering pretty useful. theres not alot of items that are real popular but i think this is two causes. one, ALOT of the stuff is tinker only. two, it seems the general community (on befallen anyway) is still pretty in the dark about tinker stuffs.

some examples, the gnomish spring boots are fairly common for folks that know them. usually as soon as im seen with them or someone starts up a conversation about them, then i get asked to make a few pairs. my absolutely most popular item is my mendor bot. despite that it says 1 charge, its a constant item and is never used up. ive brought it up in groups several times, and its a constant companion for our raids. each time after i explain the details of it i get comments about folks that are seriously considering making a tinker just for the bot. ive had alot of folks asking for the portable crafting stations and the harvesting tools. and my feign death tool is awesome. and other simple items have their uses, like the eb item to be used for getting your swimming caught up, etc.

all told, there is more stuff that you'll end up vendoring than selling as you level, but if you avoid making it a serious grind it doesnt hurt bad. and once gu33 hits, you wont have to spend nearly as long foraging.

however tinkers mainly come into play when they are secondary to an adventure class. using them as a straight crafter i dont see a whole lot of worth. so if its a straight crafter, then i would say take your time with it. you can get some benefit, but the cost return is slow. 95% of my sales are broker or guildies, and on befallen, the price isnt great profit margin.

if you have any questions feel free to send me a PM or contact me in game and i'll do my best to help you.

Hi everyone

Please can you help

This is a really noob question Im afraid

I decided to do tinkering as a secondary skill after looking at the item list

After getting the ability I bought the initial blueprints to start up with a few recipes to get me going

To my surprise I can only make 3 things and all 3 things are listed as VERY HARD

So hard that if I try to make I actually fail to make anything

Have I made some huge noob mistake and not bought all the correct L1 blueprints?

Do I just need to perservere with the very hard ones even if IM failing until my level increases although Im sure because I failed previously my level didnt go up?

Or finally if I did have all the blueprints that I should have for L1 Tinkering would I have more than 3 items to make in the firstplace?

Any help very gratefully received

I don't know if you have found the answer to your question yet, but I believe I can help if you haven't. The recipes in Apprentice Blueprints 0.001 are the only ones you will have until you reach skill level 20 and can scribe Apprentice Blueprints 0.002. All three recipes in the 0.001 book con as Very Hard when you start out, but you will notice as your skill level increases, the first recipe will get easier rather quickly, while the others stay harder for a bit of time. This progressive increase is intentional.

The best example I can give you is to compare this to tradeskilling. Every 5 skill points in Tinkering is equivalent to 1 level in Tradeskilling. So, in essence, Apprentice Blueprints 0.001 covers 4 levels or 4 recipe books.

As to your problems with getting fails, are you using the reaction arts you can purchase from the Tinker merchant? You should have two progress and two durability arts. One art will add progress or durability at the expense of 251 power and one will add progress or durability while decreasing your success chance by 11%. Even still, it will be quite difficult when you first start out. Try to persevere through the first few skill points and you will notice it becomes easier.

Lastly, you will not gain any skill points if you fail on a combine. On the flip side, you do not have to take the combine all the way to "pristine" (the fourth level) in order to gain a skill level. You can stop the process after obtaining the first level and it will not hurt your chances of gaining a skill point. The only reason to take a combine to pristine is for the returned materials. If you don't care about them, just shoot for the first level and hit stop.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Mearyk

I had not got the answer yet but that was exactly the kind of answer I was hoping for so very much appreciated

I will crack on tonight and see how I get on

I did get the 4 skills but I have not got the hang of using them as you dont have to counter and event like you do in normal tradeskilling as far as I can tell so It is difficult to decide when to use the durability and progress skills to get the best results

Shoulds I just cycle through them willy nilly or is there a method to when you hit them to increase success?

Thanks again for taking some time out to help me on this

Regards

The arts you receive work almost exactly like the arts for TSing. The only difference is that only one each of the progress or durability buffs can be used each round. This means that you cannot use the two durability or progress buffs together, even though they have different icons. Their timers coincide.

I use the same method in tinkering that I do in regular tradeskills, in regards to using arts. At the beginning of the combine, I hit my non-power consuming arts which, in the case of tinker, would be the -11% success chance ones. I continue doing this at the beginning of each new round.

NOTE: The numbers above the crafting station signify the end of a round. The beginning of the next round starts after the numbers appear on screen. At this time, you are free to use any Tinker art you have. Hit your two non-power consuming arts and see what happens. The numbers will let you know if you were successful (+15, +85) or if you failed (-25, +30). After they appear, success or failure, hit your two non-power consuming arts again.

At the beginning, don't expect to get to the fourth level. This technique should, however, easily get you to the first level.

I hope that helped.
