Illusionist Question...Follow

For starters, I just came to EQ2 from WOW and I'd like to thank everyone on Kazam for being an awesome gaming community. This is an awesome site with even more awesome players that are always willing to lend a helping a hand. You guys and this game have me HOOKED until level 70 and beyond.

I started an illusionist a week ago and already have him up to level 22. I'm having a blast with him. But last night, someone in my group suggested that I do the betrayal quest and become a Coercer because they are "tons better" than an illusionist.

Now before I even ask, I realize that "tons better" is always in the eye of the beholder. There's usually a trade-off involved regardless of which class you choose.

From my initial impressions, it appears that to go Coercer, you give up your pet, but you gain charm. Are there other differences that I'm unaware of? It would be a huge decision to betray so I wanna do my homework before I commit.

Also, I got an enchanter in EQ1 all the way to 60 and at least back then, I rarely used charm simply because when it broke, I had a ticked off beastie crawlin up my booty. Is this the same in EQ2 or have things changed?

Also, any opinions on Illusionist vs. Coercer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance and keep gaming!

Yeah, youll loose your pet. The charm sucks. They nerfed it hard core. When you charm something, it becomes the same level as you, but 3 arrows down. really not worth it. Also, the coecer gives DPS buffs rather then haste buffs. IMO, haste is better. The mana buffs after AA's is going to be about the same.

Youre right, buts all about what you think. on raids and what not, you may not be able to use the pet as an advantage. keep that in mind.

Did they nerf it since a few days ago because I was just playing a coercer and the mobs did not level down to an even(vvv). The mobs do, on the other hand, tend to break charm ALOT faster when they are above your lvl. Actually there is a chance to break early at any lvl, even mobs below you. There really is no trade off. You're getting an unreliable pet instead of a reliable trustworthy pet. Oh, and higher lvl mobs will propably resist your charm 2 or 3 times before you can get them to stick and they'll probably wear off 30 seconds later.

I personally think coercers are inferior because of this. I'd rather have haste spells anyway

I have a 70 illusionist....good gear...not raid gear but still good. I have pretty much endless power in groups and can keep most mobs mezzed indefinitely. Have done it several times while the rest of the group was rezzed and rebuffed after the MT went down. The pet was a godsend! Back in the day, we couldn't solo our way out of a paper bag but now it's doable as long as you know your limits. Gets kind of boring actually. I can't speak from a coercer standpoint but from an illusionist point of view, I love it! Groups love me for the haste/power regen buffs and of course crowd control. That's my main job. Lock em down n drool em until the tank gets ready to finsh em off. You get a sweet lil spell called illusory allies that creates crash test dummies of your entire group that the mob will agro on and kill off before it goes back to the real people. This gives you time to mez adds and healers time to get the MT healed up when things start to go down the tubes as well. IMHO an illusionist is mainly a group oriented class whose main job is crowd control. You can get pretty bored tho if you're in an area where all you pull are single mobs. lol Good luck and sorry for the lil run on. Any more questions, let me know I'll do what I can.
On a side note....I never use my pet in groups...it takes 3 concentration slots to cast and I use those 3 for haste for MT and DPS plus sometimes for the agro debuffer we get to put on the ranger who likes to draw agro unintentionally.
