Hey everyone. I am kind of new to EQII, just a couple of weeks now. I have a level 8 wood elf ranger. The city it sent me to was Qeynos, but a friend of mine in RL is part of the evil city, Freeport, right? Anyways, I was wondering if someone could tell me where I need to go and who I need to speak to to get the betrayal quest. Another question I had, as I've read through other threads in the Scout Discussion, if you do the betrayal quest as a ranger, your class changes to an assassin? Or has that changed in the recent patch? Thanks in advance. :D

No, that has not changed. If you flip you will end up an assassin, so if you want to be a ranger, stay in Q town!

BTW - when you flip all of your spells revert to being app1 so anything you have upgraded is lost. In addition, you will have to relenquish your room and empty your bank vault before you leave town.

IIRC, the NPC you will need to talk to when you start the betrayel quest is standing near the black market broker in Qeynos Harbor.

However, a much easier option for you would be to just roll up an evil character for when you want to play with your friend. The first 20 to 30 levels are dead easy to get. Much easier in fact than the betrayel quest, imho!

another thing to consider, the quests you need to do to betrey will involve going into the city after you are KOS. you will want to use the sewers to get around. as such, you might want to wait till the mobs in the sewer grey out to make that easier for you, say around 20 or so.

might be better off just creating an evil character.

Time to Be Bad - The absolute only resource you will ever need for getting away from the sea of capris pants and awkward *** grabs of Qeynos and on your way to the shining city of Freeport.

With the swiftness. ;) See ya in Freeport.

Thank you all for the help. I have also asked people ingame for help as well. I guess I will become an assassin. I don't mind the hard work, that is the fun part for me, so I'm not going to be making a new character. Plus I really like the wood elves, and they have to be good don't they? But as long as the assassins have a large range of abilities like the rangers, then I know I will still like them. People online told me they still get sneak, track, flanking and backstabbing, and arrow attacks, correct?

Among other abilities, yes. They are a very diversely skilled DPS class.

one note you no longer have to empty your bank, just your house, you house vault and your vendor at the broker then defect.

If you forget to do your house you can sneak in and do it later

True with the exception that assassins have much more emphasis on backstabbing and not nearly the ranged (arrows) capabilities of a ranger.

Yeah I noticed the rangers get alot of bow and arrow attacks, along with a range stance. I decided to wait untill my teen levels like everyone said before I was going to betray, but now I am really hooked on the ranger. I like being able to drop foes before they even reach me and are able to attack back, lol. I think I changed my mind about betraying, because I found out that I can still group up with people from Freeport. There is just a little bit more traveling needed to be done, but hey, I gained half a level in exploring new locations, so that's a plus. :)

Yes, you would turn into an ogre paladin. And I'd die a little inside.

Nah, Ogre pallies are fine. Just, being an SK I take it personally when one of us betrays. I mean, you'd be going from a lean mean tanking machine to selling Thin Mints and Do-Si-Do's in front of the grocery store for your troop fund raiser. It just gets me...right here...

Ogre's are fun to RP too. I have an exclusive RP Ogre Brigand that is always in character, even in tells. At first I'll get some strange looks and replies, but at the end of the day I get a lot of, "Smish, I've added you to my friend list." :)

I don't really understand the whole rp thing except that it hides your level, class, and etc. But that sounds pretty funny about your ogre.

He means actual role-play not just the command. Some people choose to always act when playing their character. There are specific servers for this (Antonia Bayle, Lucan D'lere) but some role-play on normal servers as well.

The main difference between Rangers and Assassins is the way they do their damage. The Ranger has more bow attacks that do amazing damage in addition to some decent backstabs. While the Assassin has lots of amazing melee attacks/backstabs and then some decent bow attacks.

Overall IMHO, the Ranger takes more skill to play at their full potential.

Alright, that makes sense. I actually like the bow attacks with my ranger. I never have any problems soloing, even higher level creatures than myself, but when I join groups I tend to get alot of aggro and I die fast if the tank can't keep the mobs off me. Sense I havn't played an assassin, I can't compare the two, but I do agree that rangers are hard to play at full potential. Thanks for the info. :)

Common problem with new scouts. In a group setting, you need to train yourself to scale back your DPS to allow the tank to maintain aggro. As a ranger you will have hate reducing combat arts and buffs. Use them. Learn to not uncap your full damage potential at the start of a fight. If you are going all-out DPS on every mob your group comes to, there aren't many tanksin the game that are going to be able to consistently keep the aggro off of you. Hate management is everyone's duty, not just the tank.

very true about the aggro management, i play with a RL friend of mine who's an iksar sk and his wife a barb inquisitor, being razor edged paper character that i am i love my hate transfer buff :) it actually allows me to let loose a little more dps than normal since it just makes them hate my buddy more than me. if they decide that dark elf is on the menu i just cast one of my hate decrease buffs and then continue to whomp on them.

Thanks for the tips guys. I didn't really understand what the hate decreasing buffs were for before because when I would be soloing I would always cast them on the target but it would never do anything, lol, now I know why. :P
