Tried the fae trial last night and absolutely loved it. I’ve already purchased the game but I was still addicted to FFXI at the time (about 2-3 months ago). However, now im completely loving eq2 and just had a few questions. How is the endgame community? Are there a lot of options for guilds? In FFXI black mages shined, is it similar in eq2? Also – when I do a search in game of the amount of players its generally only about 50 per job. This mean each server only has about 700-800 people on it (not sure how many different jobs there are).

Thanks for your time!

First of all, try to get away from the FFXI speak! You're going to be playing a class, not a job. :P

The end game community is pretty decent in EQ2. The max raid size is 24 people I would say about 70% of all end game content is instanced. This means there are usually 4-5 REALLY good guilds per server. Usually 1-2 of those are quite a bit better then the rest (contested mobs drop better loot overall).

Classes needed are generally situational. For example, I've seen two high end guilds on the same server searching for exactly the opposite classes. That said, it's generally a good idea to play what you want to play.

How about server populations? Don't want to dive into a game when I do a broad search of every class and only get about 50 per (Everfrost, listed as heavy).

I play on Najena and the Population is at a good level. Enough people to group with but not to much were everyone is in your way. Also most are helpful if you need help or have questions.

Most FFXI servers have about 2,000 people on at all times, enough to support a vibrant endgame community. Would EQ possibly be having this? From what I saw the game seems to be bigger-and from my searches only about 700-1,000 ppl on?

That site indicates a very high population (just a return of levels 68 - > 70) A through B returned 500 names - this accurate? Or does this census sight not filter out those that do not play anymore?

It lists characters that exist on the server. Should. The accounts are still active, but how often they play is anyone's guess.

I don't think anyone is going to be able to answer you in a satisfactory manner regarding actual hard numbers on server populations. I certainly can't. The best answer I can give you is anecdotal; in the 2+ years I've been playing this game I have never once logged on and not seen people looking for groups or putting together pickup raids. Not once. There are always people to group with and unless you are exploring remote, low value zones that nobody hunts in you will never be alone. I could be off-base because Antonia Bayle is the highest population server, however I have never heard folks on the other servers complaining about a lack of people either.

Thanks thats exactly the information I was looking for

MMORPG's are very involved games - just wanted to make sure I wasn't starting on something that was on its way out =P

I think you're running into a cap on the number of items the search can return, not the actual number of people playing. The fact that they're all 50 is a clue. There should be like 100 rangers for one of every other class. (Kidding, my point is there is a disparity in class popularity.)

I've never had a problem finding other people on Nektulos.

This game is anything but "on the way out" We have been climbing steadily for over a year now with no end in sight!

The dev team and the coders seem to have (and show) a genuine love of the game and a willingness to let the player base help determine the direction the game will take on an ongoing basis. If there is something we don;t like, they listen and they change it. (we might not always like the change, but they do try!)

Every expansion and adventure pack (like a mini-expansion) seems to move the game forward in a meaningful way. And every major world event (like the current Frostfell celebration) shows that the team involved cares about making us happy.

IMHO. this is not a game that is going to go away any time soon... I believe it will still be here when we all have characters capped at lvl 200!!!

Regarding the populations; I downloaded the Fae trial this week and noticed that during the day, about half the servers show "medium" and the other half "heavy" regarding populations. In the evening, most are "heavy." I suspect that this has more to do with an attempt to evenly distribute new players, but it seems a bit silly.

I played a bit on Mistmoore, and am thinking of starting there permanently (just bought the game today).

Keep in mind that the server population when you make a character is the population *at that time*. If you logged in at 3am EST and a EST server seemed empty, that's to be expected since it's an off-peak hour. Same thing goes for Asian servers - if you are not in the same general time zone you may find a sparce population.

When you choose a server, do it during your normal anticipated play times. That will help ensure you pick one that will be robust when you are on. Other things to consider; school vacations, holiday vacations, new expansion packs, weekends/holidays. These will typically bring out folks that were in hybernation.

Not sure if I'm searching right, I did a search for Najena guilds, all levels. Foundation was not listed, and some guild were listed 5 times.

It's unfortunate that site supports plat-selling, but I guess he's got to make a buck somehow, ethical or not.

another thing is while some people will play during holidays that normally wouldn't, more people play less during holiday and school vacation time because they are traveling or doing family things.
