Well like the subject says...

I recently retired from FFXI and I am in the market for a new MMORPG and I have a few questions... I've already read the stickie

How much of a timesink is it?
In FF it would take me at least 3 or 4 hours to do anything that i could feel proud of (and thats a little on the small side) I guess i want a game that lets ME choose if i want to go it solo or group up. I left FF due to time constraints (job/gradschool/marriage) so i could play games with a "pause" button, but im starting to miss having a community...

What is the community like?

What is the story like?
i'm a big story-line fan and i read about the different quests and such and that looks fun, but is there an overreaching storyline that encompases wth is going on in the world?

Never played EQ1 (well i did for a week and hated every minute) will that hurt my understanding of the world/story?

Well thats all at the moment... I'm currently downloading the WoW free trial and giving that a shot, once my ten days are up im gonna try out EQ2

oh and how well will my laptop run it?

1)Timesink, somewhere between FFXI and WoW. Nowhere near as time intensive as FFXI but not as shallow as WoW.

2)You can solo or group. You are not forced to do either. Playing solo and knocking out quests is great xp. Running a dungeon with a group is also great way to level. Having the option to do both depending on how much time you have that day is great.

3)The community, much much better than WoW. Still the occassional jerk, all games have them. However a majority of the EQIIers are MMO vets who have been playing since EQ1 days so they are all pretty cool.

4)Lots of story. There are a lot of quest chains that have their own story arc. Whether it is just 5 quests long that can be blazed through or the Qeynos Claymore progression which involves 25+ quests and can take forever to complete.

5)It should run fine on your laptop. You might be running on normal or a shade lower on the graphic scale.

I have played FFXI and WoW. I left FFXI back in June of 2004 mainly due to the excessive grind. I ended up in WoW in December of 2004. The game is fun, I had a blast playing it for over a year. However the community sucks and the content is stale. I came over to EQII when a forum poster talked me into it. At first I was thrown off by how fricking huge the world is. It was intimidating but I had some people show me around and get me situated and here I am months later at the end game and still enjoying myself. EQ2 is a solid game that is the perfect balance between FFXI and WoW.

As for understanding the lore of the game without having played EQ1, you will have no issues. The storyline is it's own, but based off the old lore of EQ1. You dont need to know EQ1s lore, but it does add more of that nostalgic feel, especially if you enter a zone you knew in the old game, and see how it has changed over the past 500 years. (there is a 500 year span between the games) But not knowing the history of Norrath will not diminish your understanding or game play in any way.
