Has something been Nerfed??Follow

#1 Oct 07 2006 at 8:31 AM Rating: Decent
I don't know what has happened but it seems as though all of a sudden my success ratio has gone WAY down. Using the durability keys a few weeks ago my success was in the 90% range for getting a pristine combine. NOW it seems that within moments of starting a combine I get -50 bombed into the stone age and lose the pristine almost immediatly. If i try to use the durability keys they actually make it WORSE! I am now almost scared to try a rare combo, especially if it is close to my skill level. I decided to post here and ask when I just tried a trivial combine (Fir wand...I was playing my lvl 38 woodworker), and NO amount of effort could save me from losing the pristine. I have a level 46 Tailor and was trying strengthened leather backpacks which are like a lvl 43 skill. A few weeks ago my success was about 7 out of 10 being pristine. I just tried yesterday and could only manage like 4 out of 10 pristine! Anyone else experiencing anything like this??

No nerf that I am aware of and I have been crafting lots of both rares and commons in the last few days.

Are you sure you are using the correct set of buffs? When you get new buffs at the beginning of each tier, they alternate between sets of +progress and +durability.

If you have changed over to the newest buffs you received you might have picked the wrong ones for maintaining durability.

What I do is to keep a dedicated hotbar set up with my newest set of +dur buffs in position 1, 2 & 3 and my newest set of +prog buffs in positions 4, 5 & 6.

Examining the details of each buff will tell you what it does.

If this was not the caswe, you might have just been a victim of a really bad streak on the RNG. I have had sessions where nothing goes right before and it is a real confidence shaker!

I've noticed this recently too. I shouldn't be having problems making ANYTHING, being a level 70 provisioner.

This is the first I've heard of such an issue.
Like OldBlueDragon says: You have to carefully study the buffs to see what they do. They generally switch effect from tier to tier, every 2. tier giving new durability buffs, the rest giving progress buffs.
Another thing to note is that many of us crafters use the buffs from two tiers lower because they work better. I do not remember when, (about 6 months ago) but one of the updates scrambled our buffs to the effect that lower tiers are sometimes more powerful.

I'm currently levelling my 48 carpenter doing rush orders, and I'm pretty sure I would have noticed if it had gotten significantly harder.
BTW: Your success rate should be significantly higher than 90% as long as you devote your full attention to the crafting process.

i've also seen this on my carpenter as well as my tinker. the tinker has been the most frustrating cause in addition to not being able to do the low skill combines, but also when i go back to grinding my even recipies for skill ups i only get a point about every 5th combine when i used to gain them for every other combine. maybe i was lucky on the skill ups before, /shrug. but back to the point at hand, yes ive had the problem with trying to get pristines, and only a couple of them can be saved.

**edit**
things seemed back to normal for my character last night. carpy and tinker both. maybe just a short glitch /shrug.

Something definitely changed. But I've figured out new technique sequences that seem to be working.

However, this game does cheat you. And when it cheats there is nothing you can do to get a pristine. I just wish if the game has decided from the start that I'm not going to get a pristine, save me the trouble and just give me a forged. I don't want to sit through the whole process if the outcome is predetermined. I don't think it's even possible to get anything less than forged(besides linkdead or cancelling) even if you tried.

Have you changed armor just before this happened? My woodworker started having small problems when I upgraded the armor to Ebon, so I tried taken it off when I crafted and I am back at 99.9% pristine.

Just curious, I've heard that you should craft "naked"? Or without armor - anyone know why?

reprinted below is an article I wrote and posted to the forums in my guild website. It is called "Crafting 101 - craft naked!" Enjoy!
Quote:
OK, they're not actually naked but many experienced crafters regularly choose to craft without wearing any armor, jewelery or weapons. Furthermore, these crafters also cancel all buffs and effects at the onset of the crafting session.

I personally follow this technique so before every crafting session, I delete all my current buffs and then my guilded toons change into status clothing, (merchant's shirt, pants & boots), while my unguilded toons change into an outfit of first tier, zero-stat cloth or leather armor. (And since LU25, they have also all added several of the new casual outfits to their wardrobe selection.)

So, why go to all this trouble just to make some stuff? Well, there is a simple and logical reason for this...

A little background: There is a basic rule in the way buffs work in the crafting instance. It is this; when you cast a crafting buff, (that costs power), instead of being a fixed cost, (like 50 or 80 points of mana), it will cost a fixed percentage of your available power pool. This will vary depending on the level of the caster but is typically between 10 & 15% of your pool. (This, by the way, is also the reason you can't "lean" on those power consuming buffs throughout an entire combine. With a total of 8 or 10 uses before you are out of power, you could never get through a pristine combine if you hit it every pulse!)

The wrinkle is that while the buffs cost a fixed percentage, power regen is still fixed at a specific number of points each pulse.

So, in order to maximize the speed at which your power returns, what you need to do is make your power pool as small as possible so that the percentage of each buff is the smallest amount it can be while the regen number each pulse is the largest amount it can be.

This also means you should use the best drink you have, but don't bother to eat, (since you don't need the stat boost and you shouldn't be losing any health).

With this set up, you will still use 10-15% of your power each time you cast one of those buffs, but now you will recoup power much quicker, (typically about 8-10% per pulse), so you will see much less downtime due to low mana.

What to wear? Well, if you've been doing writs, you will have some status points that you can spend at any city merchant for some cool stuff. Besides several different styles of "civilian" clothing, you can also get paintings and other home items and even a "rubic's cube"! These city merchants are located in various spots in Qeynos including one in Eldarr Grove and another in NQ.

If you don't have enough status points, (or you're saving them for a horse or a bigger apartment), then just go to any broker and buy some cheap lowbie armor! You should be able to find pants, a shirt and some boots all without ANY stats for a few silver! You could even go kill some T1 mobs till you get the drops you need, but that will take longer!

And finally, if you just wanna test the concept, (to see if I'm totally off my rocker!), you could just take off all your armor and jewelery and craft in the "pajamas" you were wearing when you rolled up the character!

Any way you decide to go, please try this out and see if you like it... I think you'll join the throngs of crafters who now "craft naked"!

(Now, if I could only find a bumper sticker!)
