I just read where 80% of female MMO players are over 22, while only 56% of males are. 20% of male players are under 18 but only 4.4% of females.

I think it's no surprise to find that teenage girls are more mature than teenage boys when it comes to gaming too!

Between 16 & 18, I would think that most girls are far more focused on their future than boys of the same age and if thats true, it would only make sense to me that fewer of them are spending processing cycles on frivalous activities like video games.

By age 22, more girls have figured out what they want their future to look like and maybe even how to get there, (so they start gaming if they choose to), while most of the boys that age are now working a 40+ hour week and looking for stress relief, (which results in a return to gaming)!

Bottom line, everybody games... YAY!

That's how it looks to me anyway... 'course I could be wrong!

There is also the difference of what males/females do while they are online.

My son (20) will play several games depending on what he likes, but will always be involved with going somewhere, killing something, or joining a team to kill the virtual terrorists.

My daughter (14) will peter and putz around the cities of Qeynos, talking to NPC's, dancing with other players, looking for fashion clothes or specialty spells, and taking money from Dad's shared bank to finance her newly purchased horse for her level 12 Druid. Horse?! What the...?!

She'll finally get into a group and go hit a dungeon, and between nukes wonder why she runs out of power and the tank dies. /sigh

Each has different goals for the games, and I'm sure it would also change with age. A 14 year old female might play differently and have different goals than a 30 year old female.

From my "experience," the girls numbers are because they are not interested in video games, they are more interested in playing games with boys and hanging out with friends. As they get older and settle down, their husband or significant other then shares their intrest in MMO's.

Boys just go from one form of proving themselves to another. As they get older they find the areas they like more.

I kinda wonder what the stats are for both men and women over say 40...

Any time I bet some player that I'm the oldest one in the group/raid/guild etc, I always seem to lose and I'm no spring chicken!

Hey, I probablly got you all beat. I hit one of the big ones in July. The big 5-0. Yeah for me! I am proud to say that my son's are following in their mother's foot prints and are now gamers. Now my son has gotten his fiancee into gaming right along with us. I am also proud to say that my niece, age 38, has two sons, very young, but also playing the game. For all of us it is a fun family thing.

As a twenty-six year old white male it feels spiffy to finally be a minority of some sort.

Lordy... and I thought I was old... =P

I am 32 and I realize that there are "more mature"(not going to use the term "older" =P )people who play games, but I didnt realize that there were so many who would actually tell there age. =P

Grats to every one of you...

I have a friend who works at G4/TechTV (use to be solely TechTV), and several years ago he mentioned that the average age of "gamers" were 23-25. We hang out in a chatroom on AOL and are constantly harrassed (if you want to call it that) by kids/teens who range from 10-19 saying that we are too old to play games. We normally just ignore them while we continue to talk about whatever game we are playing at the time... which just makes them mad and they leave, heh.

But seriously... it is AWESOME to see others like me that still play games, and aren't afraid of what "kids" think about us.

I'm 27, husband is 30, son is 4 and my mother is... well I dont have permission to say how old my mother is, but lets just say she is an MMO addict and is in the minority Smiley: wink

I've learned time and again to never assume an age. I have met teenagers whose maturity has blown me away, and immature idiots who were older than I. One of the great things about the MMO community is that you can mingle freely with people and get to know so many, with age not being a contributing factor. Many times in RL age can set us aside in different categories without us even thinking about it. As far as we know in MMOs though, our characters all are the same age ( gotta love graphics) and we find ourselves growing close to people for the common love we have in the game. The wall of age is obliterated.
