Beside a PC/hardware, what do I need to start palying this game? Do they have a version with all the add-onns and updates?

No, they do not. If you want everything as soon as you start you will need to buy the Kingdom of Sky expansion (which includes the original EQ2), the Desert of Flames expansion, the Splitpaw Saga adventure pack, the Bloodline Chronicles adventure pack and the Fallen Dynasty adventure pack. That said, here is my advice:

I recommend buying the Kingdom of Sky expansion and then waiting a bit. Most of the additional content starts at level 20 and beyond. Desert of Flames, for the most part, is over 45 content and the Bloodline Chronicles is around level 40. I cannot comment on Fallen Dynasty as I have yet to play it. Splitpaw is definitely worth buying when you hit level 20. It is an instanced zone that scales to your level.

Hope that helped.

Edited to add:

I did not see your question regarding updates. Once you install the game and get to the play screen, your system will automatically begin to update. Expect a lengthy delay at this point. From that point forward EQ2 will auto-update everytime you log in and they usually don't take longer than 5 minutes.

Also, there is an options tab on the main start-up screen that allows you to tweak your update settings. It includes additional (what I would call) "shiny" content such as downloading additional voices for NPC's and things of this nature. They make the game prettier. These are not needed, but if you want everything then you can turn this update option to "ON".

*Wrings gloved hands in anticipation*
Do these "adventure packs" include just an instanced zone or what's the deal with them anyway? Is the only way to obtain these packs over the internet or do they sell them in stores too?
I'm thoroughly enjoying EQ2 so far and am quite pleased with my decision to make the switch. The only thing better than a good MMO is more of that MMO. :D

Step 1: Buy KoS + EQ2 bundle. Play for a couple months.

Step 2: In a couple months when you reach the lvl 43-45 range go pick up Desert of Flame.

When it comes to Adventure Packs packs it boils down to

Bloodline Chronicles - Group instance in the mid lvl 30 range. No one plays there anymore, so it's a waste.

Splitpaw - A solo instance that scales to your level. Good lvl 20-50. If you have skill and like to solo then go pick this up. Not necessary but if you want more content it's there.

Fallen Dynasty - Best of the bunch, however it is lvl 50+ content. In fact it has a bunch of lvl 55+ quests then jumps immediately to lvl 68+ Heroic quests. So no need to worry about until you are much higher in level. So feel free to hold off buying it until you are lvl 50 which should be a couple months at least.

Splitpaw is a zone that contains a couple instances.

There are a handful of quests, lots of gnolls and a good place to solo.

There is also an epic quest that is completeable once you have earned the splitpaws trust that gives you a transport shard (unlimited use) which will teleport you to Splitpaw. Which is handy if you want to get to TS fast or use the Spire in TS to get to Barren Sky.

Adventure packs are more than one instance. I believe Splitpaw has a half dozen or so instances on top of the rather large zone you work through to get access and the one you wind up in when you get abducted. There are solo, group and/or raid versions of most of them.

I haven't fully explored fallen Dynasty, but it has two (three?) middling sized non-instance overland zones (about the size of the newbie island) and some instances.

Some instance zones are so small you can see the whole thing on zone-in, so I don't want you to get the wrong idea.

DSD---I'm just getting started back playing, and only have KoS at the moment, but plan on checking out the adventure packs at the correct time-hopefully the resurgence of some new/returning players will help re-populate some of the unused content. Look for me there at some point-
