A full IP ban is now in place against the spammers that have been hitting this forum. They may switch IP's or something like that, but this should slow them down at least.

Thanks Kao, as someone who is quite new to the game and unwilling to look at any other spoiler site out there I rely on this board to keep up on Bhodi's interaction with plat-sellers, and I want to know what I'm reading is recent, not just some month old post bumped by a ****.

58.33.235.183 was the latest one. THey appear to be on a non static IP address in the 58.33 range. It's a DSL modem IP out of shanghai china, and none of them appear to speak english at the number they provide.

I wish you strength and luck! They're ruining the forums for the moment, the constant necro spamming is truly annoying.

And again.

Seems less like marketing and more like revenge of some sort. This specific board is being targeted while the WoW general forum seems unaffected.

Hmm, could be a conspiracy perhaps? Maybe the WoW posters contacted the Chinese and bribed them to come here instead? Or just out of revenge for the people that recently came here?

Or is that too paranoid? Smiley: smile

With the rate they are doing this, it doesnt seem they are trying to sell their links. It looks to me that they are just trying to spam the forum with what ever garbage they can find, and are just using those type of sites as cover.

I am not saying for sure it is not a selling site, but they are running off more people then they can possibly gain from this fiasco.

I like the idea of new accounts having a limit to posts-per-day, something like 5. That seems like it would slow the spam down to a trickle, and be easy to catch.

But then the spammer would just make a repetative cycle of: make new acount > post max allowed > make new account > post max allowed.

But at least it would be some additional defense in place, since the spammers are still finding a way in.

That could be a very real situation, but I just don't understand it. (rhetorical question follows) Why would someone try to disrupt a relatively small forum of a game with a relatively small population, as compared to the global powerhouse of WoW?

Something has to happen, this guy is ruining the boards. The post cap would help, but hurts new posters. As would blocking linking sites for x amount of time. Possibly blocking password confirmation emails to certain sites such as Yahoo or whomever they have.

Agreed, it is ruining the boards. Not just the gold seller links, but more the necro spamming is completely wrecking posts. New posters won't even be interested in these forums.

The solution I can't offer, not a clue I'm afraid.
#19 Aug 20 2006 at 12:16 PM Rating: Good
Maybe not a limit on number of posts but a timer on how often a new poster can post - like less than 100 posts = 1 post every 15 minutes

And yes, it does look more like revenge than commerce. Also looks a lot like "14 year old geek revenge"!

Is it possible to roll the board back to Satuday to restore the current threads? If it is, do that and then sticky the entire front page and let the spammer(s) have pages 2+.

At least until a more permanent solution can be found.

That would kill any new threads by new posters also though, so that would be a very rough fix if any.

I still like the idea of the new posters getting a cap on posts, though that alone isn't a good fix for the spammers because they can just make a new account once the limit is reached. Maybe an auto-ban code for spamming inside of a limit? Post more then say 10 threads in the first 20 minutes of an acocunt or something and it auto-bans?
