After almost 3 years of playing, I quit FFXI over the weekend. I'll spare you the boring details as I'm sure you don't care.
I got EQ2 on the way home from work on a whim. I didn't have much time to play with it but what little bit I did I have to say I'm impressed so far.
However, I have some questions:
The roleplaying servers:
How in depth does the roleplaying get? I always wanted to take a crack at it but I don't want to get boo'd off the stage if I suck at it too badly.
Do the majority of the players on those servers actually take part in the roleplaying? It was stand to reason that you would join an RP server because that's what you want to do.

The PvP servers:
Is the PvP aspect of the game the whole "Good vs. Evil" thing, or are other players pretty much free game?

The level of role playing varies, even on the RP servers. I suspect that many of the people who chose AB or LDL as a server did so not because of the RP flag but instead because the servers are named after the two central characters in the story.

But then, I think the whole concept of a "role playing" server is kind of silly in the context of playing a fantasy game. Aren't we all really role playing every time we log in regardless of server? After all, there aren't many elves where I work and absolutely no Iksars or Karren!

To me, the concept of role playing is about internal logic. Meaning that I always want to do what I imagine my character should do given his background and circumstances.

All that being said, I'm sure you will find people on all the servers who adhere to whatever level of role playing you prefer. (I encountered a thieving ratonga last night and I play on Najena!) And that would of course include AB and LDL.

Regarding PvP. I can't help you there as I have no interest in killing other players. Fighting the enviornment is hard enough!

Roleplay really does vary.

I find the general rule is that no one RP's all the time, its just not possible. However if you put the effort into it and do RP that most people will RP back. Least that was my experience on a RP server on WoW.

Anyways hope you enjoy the game,

Edit - PvP is good vs evil, Qeynos vs Freeport, no grouping with them, no talking with them unlike PvE servers. Recent patch introduced 'exiles' which are neither and can be attacked by anyone and attack anyone good or bad.

I played (since my account is inactive due to money issues atm) on LDL, and if you find the right group of people, you'll get a TON of RP. Like Bhodi said, if you put in the time/effort to RP people will generally RP back (at least on LDL). I'm in a fairly large RP guild on LDL, wide varitity of levels, lots of helpful people, lots of RP going on most times. If you're interested in it, I can give ya some more info on em, and when I come back next month (which seems so far away right now Smiley: lol) I can put in a good word for ya (we do have forums, but i'll be damned if I can remember where cause they were put in shortly before I had to leave)

On a more OT note, I had always suspected you got your name from that anime series... now i'm sure of it Smiley: sly

(though of course I could totally be wrong lol

Oh, and welcome to EQ2.

Oh and Usagi if you have a zen for a more anime feel try out the alternate character models (SOGA) which are all anime based and gives EQ2 a whole different flavour.

I am impressed so far.
While I wouldn't consider myself the Master of all that is MMORPG, I've "been around the block" if you will.
Everquest, Anarchy Online, Dark Age of Camelot, Ashron's Call 2, Earth and Beyond, Star Wars Galaxies, Final Fantasy XI, The Matrix Online, and World of Warcraft have all seen time on my computer. I would definately put EQ2 in the top 3 best MMO's I've played.

Heh, it's been a REALLY long time.
I didn't make it past my free month in DaoC, but I had a lv 57 Enforcer in Earth and Beyond named Drealison. I don't remember the server for either game.
