Should I start up in everquest II?Follow

#1 Aug 02 2006 at 2:50 PM Rating: Decent
Hello all,
I'm thinking about starting up in EQ II, played WoW and FFXI for a while, but didn't like how they played after lvl 20 or so

I've played trial of the isle as a swashbuckler and really liked it, so my question is, will this game remain fun after a month or so of playing or should I hold on to my money and not dive into the MMO thing again. The problems I've had are that the storyline in other MMO's goes by the wayside and gets replaced by boring lvl grinding.

I am in the same situation. I was just curious as to where and what to buy to get the full version of EQ2? I think there are two expansions but am not sure. I just completed the trial and loved it. Any advice would be helpful.

You want to buy EQ2 + KoS retail. That box as shown in the link comes with Everquest II plus the Kingdom of Sky (2nd expansion) for $29.99.

Best deal out there, you don't need Desert of Flame until you get to the lvl 45+ portion of the game.

There are hundreds of zones, thousands of quests, and too many items to count.

If it remains fun depends on how you play it. If you grind out levels and sprint to the level cap, then you will run out of things to do. If you speed-click through quest-NPC just to get it done, then you'll never know the story. If you play for 12 hours a day, you'll get burned out.

However, if you take your time, read the NPC dialogue, explore all zones, and talk with other players, you'll find a very rewarding experience.

You'll find some different communities in the other games. FFXI tends to be more difficult to play, WoW tends to have a large immature crowd.

Each game also has different mechanics and graphic styles, so it's all up to what you prefer. We can't decide for you, but we can let you know that it's a great game.

Most definitely true. Even small things like books you find as collectibles or as quest rewards can become an interesting thing to read. I've found a rather hilarious book (reward for a collection quest actually) about an Orc architect detailing the events during the construction of the bridge in the zone Zek, the Orcish Wastes. It ended with him in jail as the bridge killed off a couple of hundred Orc warriors.

There are tragic tales to be found (concerning Kayne Bayle for instance), humorous, mythological (with the creation tale according to the Harpies for instance)...

And that is just one part of a rather extensive tale and background story you can find all over the game. The prime example I can give would be Nektropos Castle, that is one zone that is a tale on itself, beautifully done.

(edited to add: there is grinding in this game, no question about it, but you have to get your xp from somewhere, at least there are normally always quests to cover that grinding. It can be hard at times, there seem to be problem levels that fall in between zones, too high for one and just a bit too low for other zones for easy and swift hunting, but all in all, in my 57 levels I've never really experienced much actual grinding, or at least the feel of it)

The biggest problem I had with FFXI was the level grinding that you have to do to get anywhere in the story and the rigid progression route of "go this place for this level and only this place" and the biggest problem I had with WoW was the little kids who can't act right. It sounds like there is a decent community here though. I may cough up for the full version if anyone is willing to guide me through the game a bit. What servers do some of you play and would you be willing to mentor me?

Interesting ultimatum. Although personally, I would rather see your decision based on the belief that you will enjoy your time in-game rather than the insistance that someone is available to pull you through the content.

Didn't mean it that way, just meant it would be nice to know some people in game to talk to and ask questions. Like a mentor or something of that nature. After all, it can be incredibly difficult to walk into a game that's been out for a while where everywhere seems to know where to go and what guilds are good and who to stay clear of. That kind of thing... I'm not saying I won't play if I have to earn my way through the game myself, just that I'd like to know a few people on my server that I can be sure are decent people to play with.

Believe me, I'm the last person on earth to look for a handout.

By the bye, olddragonsage, I one hundred percent agree that looking for someone to "pull you through the content" is no way to enjoy a game. You seem to be a fairly mature gamer, and I'm just looking for such people to play with.

Considering that in this case the OP was specifically asking about if he should start playing EQ2 or not, and COMPARING IT TO FFXI/WOW it has a lot to do with EQ2 actually. Even those posts. Seriously man, like bhodi said:

Actually, I have a better idea... Go to forum=4 and post there some. Especially how you're whining about a thread being moved to the FORUM WHERE IT BELONGED.

This is not forum fun. It's childish and inane. It deserved to get moved and it did, he got /butthurt and game over. No need to allow him to drag you into a slap fight over it.

But, but... slap fights are so fun. Smiley: lol It's no fun when he just leaves though. Oh well, I wasn't planning on doing anything besides that anyways. Though maybe the forum=4 was a bit over-board. Oh well. In the mean-time, i'm going to go play some EQ2, watch some anime, and maybe check back later Smiley: lol
