Best Race for NecromancerFollow

#1 Aug 01 2006 at 12:02 PM Rating: Decent
Hi everyone, I am new to EQ2 and was wondering out of Dark Elf, Iksar and Erudite, which one would make the best necromancer, also, I was wondering if necromancers were good at soloing?

There really is no best race for any class, it all depends on what you want to enjoy.

Erudites have higher initial INT stats, but that will quickly be overcome by the stat-boosting gear.

An Iskar will have it's tail sticking out of the back of the robe.

Dark elves look just plain mean.

Necros have powerful pets that are the main way they deal damage. Necros use poison and disease magic and have nice life tap abilities. At higher levels they are able to resurrect slain party members. Necros deal good damage to single targets, while Conjurers deal damage to groups.

Bottom line, pick something you will like as you level and grow.

If you play on one of the PvP servers the Erudite's aura sense (blue is caster/green is healer) will help you in determining your next victim.

when I think of necromancer I always think of dark elf. I played one on eq1 and just started one for eq 2. you hardly ever find a good dark elf they are just so evil.

I've also found that race doesn't really matter on paper, which is the way it should be IMHO. I have a human Necro, although I was tempted to go gnome, modeled after my Gnome Necro in EQ1.

Play whatever race fits your personal preference.

Edit: I just realized that no one answered the solo question. The answer is a resounding YES. They solo very well indeed.

In my opinion either dark elves or gnomes make the best necros for three reasons.

1. They're both evil, so no painful betrayel quest required.

2. They both have excellent night vision. I personally hate to keep jacking with the gamma button! It's just easier to hit my ultra-vision button!

3. They both start off with high INT.

1. Erudites and iksar are also available in evil flavor.

2. It doesn't get hardly as dark at night in eq2 as it did in eq1

3. Erudites start off with the highest intellegence and have better wis than dark elf and gnomes to boot.

And stat raising equipment will not balance out stats because that erudite is going to be boosting his int as well. However, I don't think that high int really amounts to anything even if it says so on paper. You probably won't notice any difference between a iksar with 20 int vs an erudite with 30 int beside power pool.

To me the necromancer is what I think of when someone says "solo". They have very strong pets that are sometimes better than a PC fighter or tankat that same level. They also have the ability to heal the pet and you don't even have to worry about your hate building by healing like you did in EQ1. They get some powerful DOTs and are an easy class to learn IMHO. Once you do get the hang of them and master the art of soloing you can grind very efficiently.

Race-wise I went with a Dark Elf just because I wanted to go along with the thought that when I think Necromancer, I think Dark Elf. I saw an Erudite Necromancer at the same level as me and we were soloing the same general things and he looked to be fairing just fine, as was I, so I don't see any huge advantages to picking one race over another. I remember in EQ1, you almost never saw a Troll Shaman at high levels because things like wisdom and intelligence were so much more important in that game but it's not so true for this game. With the regeneration system there is very rarely any downtime and you almost never hear "OOM".

I'm not sure how much this helped but I hope I got my message through to you that race in this game is a matter of preference, not so strategic as it was in EQ1 but whatever. Happy Hunting =)

Ok so if race doesn't matter then i could make an Ogre necromancer and it would be as easy to play as the naturally high INT race right?
