EverQuest 2: crashes before the game even starts (was forum=Follow

#1 Jul 30 2006 at 5:11 PM Rating: Decent
I JUST bought Everquest 2, and the game won't even start before it crashes. The Sony applet comes up to patch the game and then just shuts down again. I've tried reinstalling the game multiple times, and my comp's specs are higher then what the game requires. Anyone have any idea what's going on?

out of curiousity do you by any chance have some kind of firewall up atm?

Happened to me about a year and a half ago - before I upgraded my computer. Bet your rig can't handle the strain.

Are you sure that your video card is up for it? That's often the biggest problem.

It shouldn't be a firewall, just make sure it allows the game to go online.

I ask the firewall question because its usually something that shouldnt affect the game play, but has done so in the past. I've had issues where my firewall starts acting up, not allowing anything through, even if I granted access prior. Just something that came to mind

That is true, I had that problem when Windows released their servicepack 2, with the firewall built in. That one was fun, default setting was to block everything, couldn't even access the internet anymore.

Highly annoying things at times, firewalls.

Sounds like it's happening before he/she even gets to the login screen.

A firewall issue sounds plausible.

This sounds exactly like the problem that I had when I got the game just a little while ago. I solved it by reconfiguring the router on my system. Check the your firewall and the quality of your internet connection.

Before I fixed my issue, I could go online (poor quality) but the game couldn't get past the router.

I'm confused by ya'll though.

If a firewall is going to stop a connection the patching server, it'd stop a connection to the prepatcher which is litterally the same server/port. If this was the case, he should get the prepatcher box that says SOE on it but the bar at the bottom wouldn't move, as it wouldn't be able to connect either. Then he'd never be able to see the Login screen/Patcher in the first place?

I wish I could see first hand what it looks like...

Ahhhhhhhhh Hmmmm maybe by "Sony Applet" he does mean the prepatcher. When that cant get a connection it will shut itself off automatically (which I guess would look like crashing.)

Soooooo ya then check your software firewalls and your router/gateway firewall.

Well, that was your first problem, using Windows *built-in* firewall.

That fault was remedied rather quickly Smiley: smile

I've never made that mistake again, some things I only need experience once! (although I still do use IE and WMP for instance, I'm lazy first, no desire to switch or look for something better)

I still use WMP, but IE has fallen by the wayside. There are still one or two sites for me that won't work properly in Firefox, so IE is still needed. Windows keeps trying to turn it's firewall on, always recommending me to do so. Is there a way to turn that sh*t off?
