Thinking about coming back, several questionsFollow

I played a Barbarian Berserker when the game originally came out (I have my collector's edition silver tin box right here) and I think I tried the game again maybe once. I originally quit do to the fact that the levelling was very slow, and some presure to stay on top. Me, my brother, and a few friends started up "The Illuminati" on Kithikor. It seemed like everyone except for me wanted to be the best, and be on top all the time. So when I was experimenting with the crafting and talking to all the npcs and exploring and such (it had been one of my first mmos) they were out grinding. When we were getting ready to start doing the Blackrock Keep (was that what it was called?) they were a good 5 levels higher than me. After that I just started to lose interest in the game, because my initial purpose as a tank/damage dealer was filled by the swarms of players looking to get in our guild.

Then maybe 6 months ago I tried again. I started up a gnome mage and got him to level 18 or something and evnetually kinda phased out of it, but I can't really remember why. I think it might have had something to do with my brother starting up wow and wanting me to play or something. Anyways, I really enjoyed the raised xp and drop rates.

Now, with the game overhall, I'm thinking about starting up again. I think I'd enjoy getting right down into what my target class is meant for.

So, my questions are as follows:

1. I like to solo, but groups are a fun way to get contacts in the game and enjoy yourself. So I'm wondering, what class should I choose? I'm probably going to mainly want to solo, but when I want to group, I don't want to have huge trouble finding one.

2. Expansions. Starting out, do I need them? I don't wanna spend too much money on something that I don't know if I'll be interested in or not.

3. How are the rates? Have they been increased or decreased recently?

4. What server and side do you think would be most welcome to helping newbies, ie, old equips, spare coin, etc. Can you advise against some?

Sorry for the long post, but thanks for everyone who read it all and is willing to help me out.

There is much useful information in the sticky at the top of the forum.

Any class can solo, some do it better than others. Templars are supposed to be the worst soloers, and I soloed 90% of the way to my current level and it's not as horrible as some people make it out to be. If you like to explore the world and do all the quests you'll find yourself leveling nicely as a side effect of having fun. You should play what you enjoy, especially since you want to group and solo. I always see people putting together groups and looking for tanks, healers and dps, basically all classes. 20 months after launch you may find it harder to get a low level group for a specific task than it was at launch, but that should be understandable. My server seems to have a good population at all levels. I've leveled many alts recently and I always see people in all the newbie zones.

I'm sure the local troll 'shadowrelm' will come by and tell you you need to be a guardian or a templar if you want to have any chance at all of getting a group, and that no one will be interested in grouping with you for lower level quests. Ignore him, he outright lies about this game. His posts will disappear within 24 hours.

You do not need them. They're geared 99% to high levels. That said, the current retail box for Kingdom of Sky includes the base game for $20 - 30, so you may as well get that, then get Desert of Flames when you hit 45 or so. KoS does have one thing for lower levels, the acheivement system, which you start using at level 20.

They increased the rate for Station Access subscribers (lets you play all SOE games) by $3 to $25.00 recently. EQ2 only subscriptions are priced the same as at launch, with discounts for paying in advance. (If you do pay in advance, there are no refunds.)

Nektulos is a great server, good population, nice people and a very good economy. I seem to find people in Qeynos are more helpful, I suppose just because some of the people who want to play evil classes in an evil city are a little evil themselves :). The only servers I would avoid are the very low population Euro or Asian severs, for obvious reasons.
