High Level Feedback on UIFollow

#1 Jul 27 2006 at 8:52 AM Rating: Good
I mentioned not too long ago when I had returned to the game that I have always had an interest in UI Modification and Development. While I'm only a lonely level 23 in-game, I've begun the daunting task of refacing and rebuilding my entire UI. But I'll need feedback and just general criticism from all kinds of sources, and while I'm in the primitive starting stages here...I figure what better place than here! There's a Link in my Sig to my UI Journal, and I've just uploaded the first picture of the Player, Target, and Implied elements. As I continue, feel free to pop in and give me some constructive criticism (or even just tell me if something sucks or not) so I can fine tune it as I go.

It'll be especially helpful to have people with Raid & End-game experience to critique me to help me develop and fine tune elements that I don't use myself, as well. Link below : )

how big do you like your UIs?

I'm kind of a minimalist, when I played WoW I worked really hard to make an interactive, minimalist UI that ended up being very cool. Unfortunately I was extremely bored with the game and left shortly after finishing it.

I like a lot of information packed into tiny area's, good accessibility to options, but maximizing actual screen space for the game and minimizing the amount of memory to process textures and stuff in the interface.

I am a minimilast aslo. I don't like all the fancy shmancy artsie fartsie stuff like dragons or whatever built into my UI.

The inventory bags need to be small enough to easily fit on my screen side-by-side when they are all opened up. I generally like to have all my bags, including my bank bags open at the same time. The default UI had those humongeous huge bags that just wouldn't all fit on the screen. They changed them so you could make them smaller but then that was so buggy it cause other problems.

I also see no need to have a picture of my toon open when I open my inventory bag. What's the need for that space hog? I like the short-cut icons that Thor uses in his UI. Click the bag to open all your bags, click the glasses to increase your gamma for better night vision, etc.

I think I great UI would allow you to customize your UI per toon. My son plays on my laptop once a week and he is always changing the map options. He likes his map to fade in when you curosr over it and I don't. It would nice if the UI would make those option affect only the toon that is logged in at the time. I guess the was it is now may be account specific since he is playing on my account.

Something Thor used to have was extra tips in the quest journal. I know that was a lot of work but it's something that I really miss. One page would be Lore & Legend and list information on those quests. Information like where you picked up the quest and what the reward was. Another tab listed Heritage quests.

I think a nice feature might be if you could change the color of your UI. Not a lot of colors to chose from, maybe a dozen. Colors like storm gray, silver fox, Halas blue, all light colors.

That's just some of my thoughts off the top of my head.

Are there any UI's out there for a total computer dummy to download? I'd like to have more maps available.

Thanks for any info!

Actually, this feature is back and fully updated but it has been moved. It now lives in the "THOR UI info journal" conveniently located in the orange book in the top row of buttons for the EQ button cluster. (I think it's the middle book).

I agree that this is an outstanding feature and I use it all the time.

Two seperate issues, but both can be solved with a visit HERE

For a simple to install and easy to understand complete UI, I recommend THOR. It even comes with an auto-installer and an auto-updater!

For mapping, there is really only one choice, EQ2Maps is the best available 3rd party map mod you'll find. It is also available with an auto-update feature. Enjoy!

I'm only lvl 37 so I can't help you with the high-end stuff, but I too prefer minimalist.

Seriously, as far as I am concerned, pretty much every element of the EQ2 default UI needs to be reduced in size to about 50-60% of what it is now, make the fonts smaller and less blocky, take away the curliques and crap from the title bars and often get rid of the title bars themselves, add an "open all" (to open all bags) button to the bank window and the inventory window, and call it a day.

Right now, my basic UI is Fetish Nightfall but I have added on the bank window from Profit and this size-adjustable hotbar and this ultra-tiny bag mod.

Problems at this point with the UI is that the text on the "open all" button for the bank window and the number labels for the coins in the bank window don't show. The bags seem to work great, except that if you have a larger bag and replace it with a smaller bag, there will be invisble deadspace below the smaller bag until you restart which can keep you from clicking things it seems you should be able to click on.

The text labels of the hotbar mod are too big and seem to be a blocky or even bolded font, and when you turn them off by selecting no frame and title-bar, they come back the next time you log in or zone, which means your teeny=tiny hotbar icons are mostly covered up with text. Only thing I don't like about the Fetish basic UI is that some of the windows need to be made even smaller, and there needs to be an "open all" button on the minimized inventory window to open all the bags.
