most everything now unavailable can be used as a root. If you want to know what else you can do with them, carry a few stacks of items down into the crafting instance and look at the alternative items in each recipe. There is always a buttoon for each ingredient that when you have multiple stacks, will let you choose shich one you want to use. Try that.
