What is the population of your servers generally? From what it sounds like eq2 is losing popularity? I dont see too many active forums, and I would like to find another game that has a very active community, both online and on the forums?

Server population seems fine. You will see variance in levels. Healthy end game population, also a lot of people in each bracket, levels 1-50 especially. Lvl 50-60 is kind of barren for a number of reason but picks up again at 60 from what I hear.

It is actually seeing a resurgence in popularity. Lots of old players coming back as well as new ones. They basically released a less than complete game back in November 2004 which scared a lot of people off. 20 months and 2 expansions later the game is absolutely great.

Goto the EQ2 official Forums
. Very active, lots of interaction between developers and community.
On a side note EQ2 comes between WoW and FFXI on the difficulty scale. You can solo stuff and do well. However there are a number of Heritage quests and unique encounters that require grouping as well as skill to complete.

I just returned to EQ2 also =) and from what i've seen zones like Thundering Steppes are still very crowded was surprised to see so many people.
Don't worry about the OP rating in the thread here, it's just the undoing of the nuked thread from the "scorched earth" period of spammification.
