Can you get a spyware/virus/etc from accepting mail in EQ2?Follow

#1 Jul 02 2006 at 1:55 AM Rating: Decent
I made a new character today and finally got off of the island and as soon as I did I went to the mailbox to get the gold I sent my new character, and I noticed that I had another mail from some character named Petunia.

The Petunia mail had a crafted chair in it as a gift and the mail said something like, "Welcome to EQ2 (or hello to an alt), I have a ton of crafted furniture so I am sending it out to all new characters. I am leveling up my crafting. Either put it in your house or sell it to a vendor."

Not within 5 seconds of me taking the gift I start getting pop-ups from www.intelliton.com and them redirecting Internet Explorer to different companies ... it is very annoying and I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem...

Or a warning to others to NOT accept gifts from strangers...

post if you have heard of this...

A better place to post this would be here.

I've never heard of anything like that personally, and I find it hard to believe that someone could hack the game (since that is what you would need to do) to send viruses to others through the mail. You should also call a GM in-game, since the only way they really could would be to hack the game so the GM could probably see the modification of the game. I still find it a bit hard to believe you got it from the mail and all, but I suppose it is possible.

Two days ago I logged in and saw that I had mail in the Norrath mailbox. I went to the mailbox at the TS docks to see what my guildmates were sending me.

I found a mail from someone I never heard of, I think the name was Dregd, and I was being sent 2gp 40'ish sp. I'm not one to turn away free money, but before accepting the gift, I wrote a reply back saying that I appreciate the money, but if it was sent to me in error, I'll gladly send it back.

Upon attempting to send the mail, I got an alert that the "player does not exist". That tells me the name is no longer a player name.

I have no idea who it was or why I was sent the coin. But I suspect it is duped plat and my account has since been deleted, my hard drive re-formated, and my car towed away.

Each character I've made I have gotten a gift of stuff in the mail just like its described (usually food though) and I have never once had a problem from accepting it.

Everything is handled server side so I dont see how they could jack you with in game mail.

It seems that Petunia is infact a player, but who says the person isnt using a L.20 character to send out the rubbish... (since the character is old and is only a L.20... unless I am looking at it wrong)(yeah... I just checked and the Petunia character is an ALT so maybe they dont play it much)

http://eq2players.station.sony.com/en/pplayer.vm?characterId=375918107

I posted at the official EQ2 forum, and the only reply said it was a coincidence that the pop-ups started happening at the same time.... which is still kinda sketchy if you ask me, since I have a firewall and 2 or 3 different malware/spyware programs running.

http://eqiiforums.station.sony.com/eq2/board/message?board.id=tech_support&message.id=168761

The Intelliton malware/spyware/adware thing is based on cookies from what I have read about, so deleting the cookies might solve the problem and it might not. But here is a link to a thread that helped one person out with it. (he didnt say where he thought it came from)

http://www.help2go.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,32/page,viewtopic/t,20145/postdays,0/postorder,asc/start,0/

So it still remains a question on where I got it... I dont browse the web like other people do. I go to the same sites over and over. No one else uses this computer. The only browser window (AOL IE) that I think I might have had open at the time of the pop-ups starting is Allakhazam.com, but I am 100% sure they started within 5 seconds of me accepting the chair as a gift. I do not have premium services for Allakhazam, but the actual pop-ups are very different than the Allakhazam pop-up/unders... the non-AOL IE browser is where the malicious pop-ups happen and not with the regular AOL IE browser like the Alla ads. Plus they always start out at www.intelliton.com/advertising/blahblahblah then they redirect...

Very disheartening. :/

But since I cleaned out the cookies and deleted all temp files and everything else that you delete after something like this happens... I have yet to get a pop-up. ::knocks on wood::

Also... I changed my EQ2 password. I have yet to delete the chair, so maybe when I log back on and the chair is in my inventory the pop-ups will start again... I will be a very sad angry person.

Part of your problem could be the fact that you are using Internet Explorer.

I can't think of an application with more holes and security flaws in it than IE. The first thing you should do is switch to a safer browser like Mozilla or Firefox and then NEVER open IE again!

Good luck and hope the trash is off your system now.

I use AOL mostly, which means I cant just delete IE or AOL wouldnt work. Unless there is a fix that lets Firefox intergrate into AOL so AOL doesnt need IE to function.

I have Firefox, and I use it for most of my non-normal browsing, but as long as I have IE (and AOL) I will never be 100% safe... but of course you are never 100% safe... ever.

I thought I heard champagne corks popping as I left...

Actually, I was just being dramatic about my account. I'm alive and kicking on Najena!. In fact, Kindle's tombstone will most likely say, "Kindle, we just couldn't get rid of him". ;)

All bad news there. I agree with using some other secure browser. The only hitch with that is if you ever need to go to Micrsoft to download a path or fix they will only recognize IE.

I have in the past sent out bits of furniture to folks who seem to be new or have empty rooms. I always signed my signature as the furniture fairy though. It's just a way of sharing productus that I have made in abundance.

Pardon any errors. I decided to clean my keyboard last night and it no longer works. I am using an ergonimically correct split keyboard now. Note to self: never clean computer equipment after consuming a bottle of wine while wearing an "over the hill tiarra." Also one should not attempt to picture of one's self while wearing said tiarra.

Now, I owe it to myself to tell you, Mr. Tutan, that if you are thinking of taking the tribe cross country, this is your automobile: The Wagon Queen Family Truckster. You think you hate it now, but wait 'til you drive it.

lol...

So that hacking/duping ISNT just a matter of decrypting game files, everything is handled serverside... EVERYTHING.

Litterally, think of the game as your window into the server. True, the UI, graphics, icons, sky, grass, ect are on your computer. But for the most part they are just where they are told to be on the computer. You can't even effectively move without the server allowing it (and yes your client makes sure you don't walk through walls before the server can stop you) but if you've ever experienced bad lag where you keep popping behind where you are supposed to be you'll know what I'm talking about. When you open mail in EQ2 your not downloading ANYTHING. There isn't even a way for them to get your IP through EQ2 mail. Litterally the server just says that that player no longer has said item and you get a new said item. Now that your account says that, your window shows that new item... but it's already on your machine... that icon, name, graphic, ect is already downloaded...

True your machine reads from the server a few tags... Condition, Crafter, item #, but those are just tags (think extra fields where you can put in a few characters.)

Nowhere in the transaction is there a place for the sender to upload anything, nowhere in the item is there any room for any sort of 3rd party program, script, identifier, or tracer.

Recieving mail is about equivilent to opening your bank or zoning. =)
